 We are looking for two experienced software test/integration engineers who will be primarily responsible for the verification and validation of software products within the Science Operation Software Department (SCS) based in Garching. The SCS department comprises a team of Software Engineers, including 26 staff members and a number of service contractors, organized in 3 groups who are responsible for the definition, design and implementation of the ESO Data Flow Systems (DFS) used to operate advanced astronomical instrumentation and telescope systems at ESO's Observatories in Chile.
 Main Duties and Responsibilities:

 

 The first assignment of the successful candidate(s) will primarily be the verification and validation of a subset of the DFS applications. Most of these client-server components are designed and developed using object-oriented technology and relational databases, running on Linux. S/he will analyse requirements for consistency, correctness, uniqueness, and testability. S/he will be responsible for defining, implementing and manually or automatically executing test cases to ensure that user requirements have been met and that the behaviour under abnormal or extreme conditions is acceptable. Test data will have to be defined and maintained, test plans written and reviewed within the project teams, and test reports produced, cording to DFS Software Quality Assurance standards. Finally, s/he will contribute to the DFS application support activities, software configuration management issues, and to the continuous improvement of SEQ's test methodology and process.

 Experience:

 

 A minimum of three years of experience in testing and integration of complex distributed software applications running on UNIX platforms is required, including the testing of Web and/or desktop GUI applications.
 Key Competence:
Knowledge of standard test design techniques and inspection methods
Proven track record of coding automated tests
Willingness to work in an agile, iterative, incremental development process with periodic test cycles.
Continuously improves the development/production/test environment
Provides clear, concise and timely oral and written communications, identifies the key issues, examines options and proposes the way ahead
Timely recognize critical issues and raise the attention of the concerned people
Recognise and master situations with potential for conflicts
Establish strong collaborative working relationships with the integration and development teams and with the stakeholders
Is flexible in planning, setting and adjusting priorities in agreement with the supervisor and the stakeholders
Monitors progress of own work and delivers to agreed deadlines and standards
Develops own skills and ensures that learning and development needs are identified, solutions found and outcomes evaluated
Is capable to work for different projects and with different teams in a matrix structure, also in parallel and under pressure
Takes over responsibility and is able to take decisions
Excellent communication skills and a strong team spirit are essential, together with motivation, flexibility and capacity to learn quickly the existing system and the underlying problem domain
 Qualifications:

 

 University degree in computer science, electronic engineering, physics or equivalent.

 

 Proficiency in the development of functional, regression and performance test procedures. Sound experience with Java/Groovy, Unix scripting languages (Python, Bash) and relational databases (Sybase, Oracle or equivalent). Experience with dedicated software testing tools (test drivers, capture replay, testing frameworks) and software engineering tools (build and continuous integration systems). Experience with standard software engineering practices will be considered an asset, as will be an ISTQB certification.
 Language Skills:

 

 Excellent command of the English language is essential.

 The contract is for a fixed term duration of three years, and is subject to successful completion of the probation period.
