1.     Organizational Context

 

a.    Organizational Setting

 

The position is located in the Goods and Services Database Section, Madrid Operations Division of the Madrid Registry.

 

b.    Purpose Statement

 

The Madrid Goods and Services (MGS) Database is the online application designed by WIPO to facilitate national as well as international trademark filing, need to be maintained, monitored and updated, in line with WIPO's commitments expressed in Madrid Assembly decisions and Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) on MGS development, as well as with requests expressed by external entities such as National Intellectual Property (IP) Offices and the community of trademark applicants.

The incumbent is responsible for preliminary data analysis, report generation, technical and procedural support and alignment and reconciliation functions in connection with the Madrid Goods and Services Database and the NICE Classification Standard.  The incumbent also assists in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of the MGS system.

 

c.    Reporting Lines

 

The incumbent reports directly to the Head of the Section responsible for the management of the Madrid goods and services manager system.

 

 

2.     Duties and Responsibilities

 

The incumbent will perform the following principal duties:

 

a.  Accurately update goods and services terms in the MGS to reflect additional terms provided by external sources using existing database and search tools;

 

b.  Analyze and integrate new translation, correction and acceptance status data received from National IP Offices into the MGS;

 

c.  Ensure alignment between MGS content and that provided by the TM5-ID list, the EU harmonized database and the USPTO ID Manual;

 

d.  Maintain monitoring systems to ensure the continuous availability of the MGS to the public and liaise with IT support as necessary;  liaise with other WIPO related activities such as Global Brand Database and Translation department to ensure data consistency and effective cooperation in maintaining up-to-date goods and services data in the MGS;

 

e.  Verify accuracy and check sources of incoming data, initiate correspondence to establish clear communication with data providers and assist in data analysis and correction as required;

 

f.   Prepare detailed data reports required for updates to Nice Alphabetical List and support related Nice classification activities;

 

g.  Prepare data extracts of new concepts for translation and acceptance checking, customized to each MGS participating office;

 

h.  Reconcile contents of MGS database with ongoing updates to the Nice classification standard;

 

i.   Produce periodic reports regarding overall alignment of database contents with international standards;

 

j.   Perform other duties as required.

 

 

3.     Requirements

 

Education

Essential

Secondary education with relevant diploma.

 

Desirable

Technical or university courses related to Information Technology and/or database analysis.

 

Experience

Essential

At least eight years of progressively responsible work experience in data analysis, processing and systems support.

 

Desirable

Hands-on experience in preparation, implementation and monitoring of high availability, data intensive systems within a fast-paced program team with multiple demands.

 

Language

Essential

Excellent written and spoken knowledge of English.

 

Desirable

Knowledge of other official UN languages.

 

Job Related Competencies

Comprehensive knowledge of IP related databases.  

Working knowledge in the Microsoft Suite of Products (including MS Word, MS Excel & MS PowerPoint).  

Meticulous attention to detail and ability to spot irregularities.

5.      Information

Mobility:  WIPO staff members are international civil servants subject to the authority of the Director General and may be assigned to any activities of the Organization. Accordingly, the selected candidate may be required to move from time to time to new functions.

 

Annual salary (Net of tax):  81,421 CHF

Additional Information

 

* Initial period of one year, renewable, subject to satisfactory performance.  No fixed-term appointment or any extension hereof shall carry with it any expectancy of, nor imply any right to, (further) extensions or conversion to a permanent appointment.

 

Dependency allowances

7,939 CHF per year for dependent spouse;  6,398 CHF per year for each dependent child.

 

Language allowance

Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish: 4,788 CHF per year for two of these languages, and 3,192 CHF per year for one of them.  The allowance is not payable for the mother tongue or the main working language of the staff member.  The grant of this allowance is subject to examination.

 

General Service posts are generally subject to local recruitment.  Staff in the General Service category is recruited in the host country or within reasonable commuting distance of the Headquarters.
