Description
:  

NCI Agency is looking for a Database Assistant to work in the Communications and Information Systems (CIS) Support Unit (CSU) which is currently located in Brussels, operating a centralized ICT Service Centre.  Do you have experience with giving technical support to customers and ensuring the efficient running and installation of database management systems (DBMSs) and databases (DBs) on various networks?  If so, then this could be the job for you.

You would work in a small team and deal with a wide range of tasks related to the installation, configuration, testing, securing, monitoring and managing of DBMSs and DBs to include resolution of 2nd level support calls.  You would also be required to assist in the identification of short, medium and long-term requirements and would support the preparation of specifications for and execution of future upgrades of systems under control.

Role Responsibilities:

You report to the Head, Database Management Section and be responsible for:

  • The daily operations and maintenance of the various database services and their related infrastructure.
  • The provision of second line database support to the Service Centre.
  • Implementing the defined backup strategy for all database systems and the execution of tests ensuring that a valid recovery plan is in place.
  • Working closely with the other sections as required when resolving incidents or planning and implementing changes to the systems.
  • Assisting in defining and implementing an upgrade strategy to keep the DBMS environment current.
  • Implementing required configuration changes following a formal change management process.
  • Implementing appropriate security measures and ensuring that systems are developed adhering to business continuity standards.
  • Ensuring that all actions taken are accurately documented in accordance with the ITIL standards & procedures.
  • Writing procedures and technical documentation to be shared with other CSU staff members.
  • Writing, testing and using software scripts to automate repetitive work or in response to “data mining” requests.
  • Responding rapidly and accurately to multiple tasks and unexpected situations under pressure with minimal supervision.

Person Specification

Education required:

 
You will be required to have a higher level technical education in a relevant discipline, complemented with training in database administration, or equivalent through extensive professional experience.

 

 

Preferably you will also have a certification relevant to database management and an ITIL v3 foundation certificate.

 

Experience required:

 

You should have at least 8 years recent experience with database administration activities in a large scale ICT service-oriented environment and have expert knowledge in the two major DBMS technologies currently in use (Oracle and SQL Server, both at various versions).
In addition you will also have:

  • Experience with Oracle E-business Suite.
  • A good understanding of Oracle middle tier solutions (forms, weblogic, fusion, SSO).
  • Strong problem solving and analytical capabilities to analyse database related problems and ability to think beyond the database space.
  • Knowledge of current Windows and Linux operating systems.
  • Knowledge of a scripting language on Linux and Windows (e.g. bash, PowerShell, Perl).
  • A good awareness of access security and knowledge on security policies implementation.
  • Have a very good general knowledge of IT hardware and software.
  • Good written and oral communication skills.

It will be considered an asset if you also have:

  • Knowledge of Oracle Hyperion technology.
  • Knowledge of basic ICT technologies, such as Active Directory, Group Policy, Antivirus, DHCP, DNS.
  • Knowledge of Prince2 project management methodology.

Language Skills:

 

A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is highly desired.

NOTE:  Most of the work of the NCI Agency is conducted in the English language.
