Σήμερα το απόγευμα στο Ask-The-Experts της TechEd EMEA IT Pros είχα την τύχη και την χαρά να είμαι μαζί με τους product managers του System Center Mobile Device Manager 2008. Δεν είχα δώσει μεγάλη σημασία στο προϊόν αυτό και ένας από τους λόγους ήταν και το κόστος που πίστευα ότι θα είχε. Μέγα λάθος...

Τις αναλυτικές λεπτομέρειες για το τι ελέγχει, κλειδώνει, σβήνει, προστατεύει κλπ. θα τις διαβάσετε μόνοι σας. Θέλω να σταθώ σε μερικά σημεία που θεωρώ σημαντικά:

• Είναι ανεξάρτητο προϊόν. Δεν προϋποθέτει κανένα άλλο System Center προϊόν (ούτε Exchange Server) και στήνεται αυτόνομα. Για την ακρίβεια δεν συνεργάζεται ακόμη με τα υπόλοιπα System Center κομμάτια.

• Υποστηρίζει μόνο Windows Mobile 6.1 (χωρίς να εγκατασταθεί τίποτα στην συσκευή - υποστηρίζεται κατευθείαν από το λειτουργικό)

• Πριν φωνάξετε, σας λέω ότι υπάρχει 3rd party add-on που καλύπτει και συσκευές 6.0 (ίσως και παλιότερες αλλά δεν είμαι σίγουρος).

• Υπάρχει άλλο add-on από την εταιρεία Odyssey, το Athena, που παρέχει remote "desktop" support. Δηλαδή φέρνει την επιφάνεια της συσκευής στον υπολογιστή μας και μας δίνει δυνατότητα troubleshooting και repair. Κάτι πολύ χρήσιμο είναι το ότι παίζει και χωρίς VPN (για την περίπτωση που το VPN είναι ένα από τα προβλήματα που πρέπει να λύσετε). Πολύ καλή τιμή ανά συσκευή.

• Δεν παίζει προς το παρόν με Windows Server 2008 (θα παίζει με το SP1 που έρχεται σύντομα). Επίσης o management server παίζει μόνο σε 32 bits.

• Για το minimum deployment χρειάζεστε δύο κουτιά: στο ένα μπαίνει μια άδεια και γίνεται ο gateway server και στο δεύτερο μπορεί να συνυπάρχει ο management server με τον enrollment server. Άρα θέλουμε δύο server άδειες και άδεια για κάθε συσκευή.

• Πριν και μετά τον gateway server συνιστάται firewall.

• Κλειδώνετε μέχρι και την κάμερα ή τα sms (τι άλλο να σας πω. Κρυπτογραφεί όλα τα δεδομένα στην συσκευή.

• Για να κάνετε το deploy ακολουθήστε το deployment guide που υπάρχει στο Technet. Δεν είναι εύκολη υπόθεση.
