Windows 10 is available for download, so as you can see I’ve already downloaded and installed it on my laptop. I would like to start using it, although this is the Technical Preview version. Some bugs are expected, however since I’ve installed it, everything seems to run smoothly. I’m using it for some hours and I’m writing this blog post inside Windows 10, so I can say that is a stable version (at least till now).
The first thing that you notice if you install it on a no-touch laptop is that there is no Start screen by default. As soon as you log on you go directly to the desktop. You cannot see the Start screen, even if you press the Start button: in the screenshot above you can see the new Start menu, a combination of old Start menu, but now includes some modern Windows 8.x apps. You can resize the Start menu and you can pin Modern apps as you like. The good thing here is that you can still benefit from the Live Tiles and get the information that you need, just like in the Windows 8.x Start screen:


If you thin that you need the Windows 8.x Start screen, you have to enable it through the Taskbar options:

You can pin, unpin or even resize the tiles. You can also see an icon for the user account you logged on, giving you some actions when you click on it:

Next to your user account you can find the on-off button that allows you to shutdown the computer:

The new Start menu works like in Windows 7, giving you a list of all the applications that you have installed, but also a search function:


A great new feature is the ability to create additional virtual desktops, something that was an add-on but now is built-in:

Another new feature is that the new OS can now keep a history of your frequent folders and display them in File Explorer:

The notification messages have changed, as you can see in the screenshot below:

I’ve seen that there is a new option to share content, just like in Windows Phone, please notice the Share button below:

Hyper-V is also included, I’ve used it to install Windows Server 10 Technical Preview:

Charms are not available if you use a no-touch computer. But where are the settings we used to see through the Charms? Now every application has it’s own settings button, available if you click on the top left corner of the application window:
