Με την αναμενόμενη κυκλοφορία του Community Server version 2.0, η Telligent έκανε γνωστές τις λεπτομέρειες για τις αλλαγές που θα ακολουθήσει, σχετικά με τις άδειες και τις δυνατότητες αναβάθμισης για την έκδοση 2.0. Για την έκδοση v2.0 θα αλλάξουν οι ονομασίες των προϊόντων ώστε να συγχρονιστούν με αυτές που προσφέρει η Microsoft. Έτσι, η Community Edition του Community Server από εδώ και πέρα θα είναι γνωστή σαν Express Edition. Επίσης αποφασίστηκε ότι θα περιληφθούν μερικά από τα commercial add-ons με την Express Edition (με μερικούς περιορισμούς). Οι νέες δυνατότητες που προστέθηκαν στην Express Edition για την έκδοση v2.0 περιλαμβάνουν: Υποστήριξη μέχρι 50 αρχεία στο νέο File Gallery add-on Υποστήριξη μέχρι 250 χρήστες για το νέο RSS Reader add-on Η Express έκδοση επίσης περιλαμβάνει πολλά από τα νέα χαρακτηριστικά που βρίσκονται στο Community Server 2.0 όπως: ανασχεδίαση του Control Panel και των εργαλείων διαχείρισης; Υποστήριξη για Ink & Video; Υποστήριξη Podcasting; Ανανέωση των CSS; Παρουσίαση ανά Threaded στα Forums; RSS Aggregator; Secure RSS; Βασικό Content Management; Καλύτερη υποστήριξη για το Google Analytics και Ads; Ευκολότερο license management; και πάρα πολλά ακόμα. Η Standard, Professional, και Enterprise εκδόσεις, έχουν επίσης βελτιωθεί με νέα χαρακτηριστικά όπως περισσότερη υποστήριξη στο File Gallery και RSS Reader; δυνατότητα να χρησιμοποιηθούν και άλλα add-ons such όπως IP Banning Email, NNTP, και FTP Gateways; Member Rewards/Points; Καθώς και κάποια νέες αναφορές. Από το weblog του Παναγιώτη Μαλακούδη αντιγράφω: Έχουν παρουσιαστεί κάποια προβλήματα σε Exchange Clusters όταν λειτουργούν μαζί με το RightFax Connector της Captaris. Το πρόβλημα έχει να κάνει με τη συνεργασία του Right Fax και του Intelligent Message Filter (IMF) του Exchange Server 2003. Συγκεκριμένα έχει παρατηρηθεί πως κάτω από συγκεκριμένες συνθήκες, τα nodes του cluster κάνουν συνεχώς fail-over. Το παρακάτω άρθρο από την κατασκευάστρια εταιρία του Right Fax αναφέρει κάποιο workaround έτσι ώστε να μην κάνουν συνέχεια restart τα nodes. Να σημειωθεί πως αν το IMF δεν είναι ενεργοποιημένο στον Exchange Server τότε το πρόβλημα δεν υπάρχει. Γνωσιακή Βάση της Captaris

2oς Πανελλήνιος Διαγωνισμός Πρωτοπόρων Δασκάλων από τη Microsoft Ελλάς Αθήνα, 30 Ιανουαρίου 2006 Ξεκίνησαν οι δηλώσεις συμμετοχής για τον φετινό Πανελλήνιο Διαγωνισμό Πρωτοπόρων Δασκάλων, που για δεύτερη χρονιά διοργανώνει στη χώρα μας η Microsoft, στο πλαίσιο της ευρύτερης δραστηριότητάς της στο χώρο της εκπαίδευσης. Σκοπός του διαγωνισμού είναι η ανάδειξη καινοτόμων εκπαιδευτικών δραστηριοτήτων (μαθημάτων, μεθόδων, εφαρμογών κ.λπ.) που έχουν υλοποιηθεί με τη χρήση νέων τεχνολογιών. Δικαίωμα συμμετοχής έχουν όλοι οι εκπαιδευτικοί της πρωτοβάθμιας και δευτεροβάθμιας εκπαίδευσης που έχουν αναπτύξει εκπαιδευτικές δραστηριότητες χρησιμοποιώντας προγράμματα λογισμικού για Η/Υ. Οι τρεις κύριοι τομείς δράσης του κέντρου θα αφορούν στην ανάπτυξη τεχνολογικών δεξιοτήτων και την προώθηση της καινοτομίας. Αξιοποιώντας τους πόρους του Κέντρου Καινοτομίας, η ακαδημαϊκή κοινότητα, οι νέες επιχειρήσεις και οι εταιρείες ανάπτυξης λογισμικού θα έχουν τη δυνατότητα να δοκιμάζουν, να εφαρμόζουν πιλοτικά και να ενσωματώνουν τις πιο σύγχρονες τεχνολογίες στα προϊόντα και τις τεχνολογικές λύσεις που αναπτύσσουν στη χώρα μας. Η εταιρεία δεσμεύεται επίσης για τη δωρεάν παροχή λογισμικού σε τμήματα πληροφορικής και συναφών κλάδων των ακαδημαϊκών ιδρυμάτων της χώρας μας για εκπαιδευτικούς και ερευνητικούς σκοπούς. Επιπλέον, το ελληνικό Δημόσιο εξασφαλίζει προνομιακούς όρους για την προμήθεια προγραμμάτων λογισμικού, καθώς και το δικαίωμα απόκτησης όλων των νέων εκδόσεων λογισμικού της Microsoft που πρόκειται να κυκλοφορήσουν μέσα στα επόμενα τρία χρόνια. Οι εργαζόμενοι στους οργανισμούς του Δημοσίου που εντάσσονται στη συμφωνία θα έχουν δικαίωμα χρήσης του λογισμικού και στο σπίτι, ενώ θα μπορούν να εκπαιδευτούν στη χρήση νέων τεχνολογιών μέσω εργαλείων ηλεκτρονικής εκπαίδευσης. Το Φόρουμ Ευρωπαίων Ηγετών, που πραγματοποιήθηκε φέτος στη Λισαβόνα, αποτελεί μια ευκαιρία ανταλλαγής απόψεων και αναζήτησης λύσεων για ορισμένα από τα πιο σημαντικά θέματα που απασχολούν την Ευρώπη σήμερα. Το θέμα της φετινής συνάντησης, που συγκέντρωσε περισσότερα από 300 υψηλόβαθμα κυβερνητικά στελέχη, ήταν «Ενισχύοντας τον Παγκόσμιο Ανταγωνισμό μέσω της Τοπικής Καινοτομίας». Συγκεκριμένα, συζητήθηκε η Έκθεση της Ευρωπαϊκής Ένωσης με θέμα «Συνεργασία για την Ανάπτυξη και την Εργασία», η οποία προτείνει μια σειρά μεταρρυθμίσεων και βημάτων που αποσκοπούν στην οικονομική ανάπτυξη και τη δημιουργία καλύτερων και περισσότερων θέσεων εργασίας. Στο πλαίσιο του Φόρουμ εξετάστηκε επίσης πως οι τεχνολογίες της πληροφορικής και των επικοινωνιών αναμένεται να διαδραματίσουν πρωταγωνιστικό ρόλο, τόσο στον δημόσιο όσο και στον ιδιωτικό τομέα, μέσω της σύναψης συνεργασιών για την ενδυνάμωση των τοπικών οικοσυστημάτων καινοτομίας.

Την πρώτη φορά που μας το είπαν αυτό ήταν στο τηλέφωνο. 'Αντε να καταλάβεις τι εννοεί (γιατί δεν τον πιστεύαμε) και μετά, αφού βρήκαμε τι παίζεται, να του δώσεις οδηγίες για να το διορθώσει. Βλέπω ότι άλλαξαν το UI από την προηγούμενη Beta. Όλοι αναρωτιόντουσαν πως θα δούλευαν εκείνο το πράγμα. Τώρα είναι πάρα πολύ καλύτερο! Να δούμε και από ταχύτητα... Προσοχή! Δεν το βάζουμε σε μηχάνημα "παραγωγής" γιατί αν και είναι σταθερό μπορεί να δημιουργήσει κάποιο πρόβλημα σε άλλες εφαρμογές. Η καλύτερη λύση πάντα είναι ένα Virtual PC.

Το 2006 δεν έχει ξεκινήσει καλά για την RIM και τις συσκευές BlackBerry. Η NTP έχει καταφέρει να ξεκινήσει την τελική φάση στα αμερικάνικα δικαστήρια για να "κλείσει" εντελώς την υπηρεσία email της RIM στις ΗΠΑ. Στις 24 Φεβρουαρίου θα συζητηθεί στο δικαστήριο αν τελικά θα προχωρήσουν σε διακοπή. Θυμίζω ότι η διαμάχη έχει ξεκινήσει το 2001 με μήνυση της NTP για παράνομη χρήση της πατέντας της για το push e-mail. To 2003 βγήκε μια απόφαση υπέρ της ΝΤΡ για απαγόρευση της πώλησης συσκευών BlackBerry και της αντίστοιχης υπηρεσίας μέχρι το 2012 που θα έληγε η πατέντα. Και για να γίνουν τα πράγματα πιο περίπλοκα το U.S. Patent and Trademark Office έχει αρχικά απορρίψει τους ισχυρισμούς της NTP για την πατέντα του push e-mail και είναι εδώ και μήνες σε φάση επανέλεγχου. Άρα η RIM μάλλον έχει δίκιο αλλά θα αυτό θα οριστικοποιηθεί μετά το καλοκαίρι. H RIM από τη μεριά της έχει ανακοινώσει ότι έχει ετοιμάσει ένα workaround χωρίς να δώσει άλλες λεπτομέρειες και ότι είναι έτοιμη ακόμη και για την διακοπή της υπηρεσίας push e-mail. Η NTP θα της δώσει 30 ημέρες για να αντικαταστήσει το λογισμικό στις συσκευές. Έχει δημιουργηθεί όμως ήδη ένας μικρός πανικός και διάφοροι "χτίζουν" υπηρεσίες πάνω στον φόβο ότι θα μείνουν 3 εκατομμύρια χρήστες στις ΗΠΑ χωρίς το e-mail τους. Στην πράξη υπάρχουν πολλοί τρόποι να πάρεις το email σου γιατί αυτό που θα "κοπεί" (αν κοπεί τελικά) είναι το push email. Δεν θα αχρηστευτεί η συσκευή Θα μπορείς να το πάρεις μέσω web ή με τα κλασικά POP3/IMAP (χωρίς την push λειτουργία). Η TechEd Europe θα γίνεται πλέον το Νοέμβριο (από τον Ιούλιο) στην Βαρκελώνη. Τώρα θα έχουμε μια εβδομάδα την TechEd 2006: Developers στις 6 Νοεμβρίου και την TechEd 2006: IT Forum στις 13 Νοεμβρίου. Έτσι θα υπάρχει πιο φρέσκο υλικό για τους developers σε σχέση με την TechEd US αφού απομακρύνεται πλέον χρονικά. Θα υπάρχουν ειδικά πακέτα για όσους θελήσουν να παρακολουθήσουν και τα δύο events (αν και μου φαίνεται λίγο δύσκολο να λείψει κάποιος 2 συνεχόμενες εβδομάδες από την δουλειά του). Microsoft’s WSUS server is an easy-to-use and free patching tool – when it works. But sometimes there’s nothing easy about getting your Windows Update clients to talk to your WSUS server. Here’s a troubleshooting trick that’ll save you time. Remember that the Windows Update Agent that downloads patches from http://update.microsoft.com is the very same agent that connects that workstation to your WSUS server. When you’ve got a client that just won’t talk to the server and you don’t know why, try connecting that client to http://update.microsoft.com. The web site should give you an error code explaining why the client can’t communicate. You can either research the web for that error code, or sign up for the System and Network Troubleshooting Track at TechMentor Orlando. Από το You Had Me At EHLO... aka the Microsoft Exchange Team Blog Over the years that OWA has been developed we’ve kept our focus on improving user productivity through supporting many of the timesaving features present in Outlook and other Windows applications. Unfortunately many users don’t realize that these features are available in OWA since features like hot-keys aren’t often available in web applications. I think we need to do some work to make some of these features more discoverable, but until we do we’ll need to use postings like this one to spread the word that OWA is not your run-of-the-mill web mail application. I decided to do this posting after talking with a candidate that was interested in filling our OWA Test team opening (still hiring, e-mail owajobs if you are interested) who said that she very frequently used OWA, but the thing annoyed her the most about OWA was the lack of type-down search. As much as I do love showing type-down search to people who make that comment and watching their jaw drop, I decided to do my part in making some of this “hidden” functionality in OWA more visible by compiling some of my favorite hidden features in this blog post. I started with the top 10 features, but there was just too much useful functionality to share, so I had to make it the top 11 features for now, and I’m sure I’ll be adding more later. 1. OWA supports hotkeys! Billg made this request himself after typing ctrl-n and seeing a new IE browser pop-up instead of a new mail message like Outlook. Here’s a partial listing of some of the hotkeys I use most frequently that save me hours and hours: ctrl-n -Open “Compose New Mail” form ctrl-k -Resolve name typed in recipient well alt-s -Send mail escape -Close window ctrl-r -Reply to a message ctrl-R -Reply-all to a message ctrl-shift-f -Forward a message For the full listing of hotkeys see the OWA Help documentation. Remember that a message needs to be selected and have focus for many of the hot-keys to work. 2. Putting an = in front of the e-mail alias that you are trying to resolve when composing a mail will automatically resolve it to any exact matches. Tired of typing johnr in to the To: line and being prompted as to whether you meant johnred or johnr or johnreb? Well no more, simply type in =johnr and the name will automatically resolve to johnr when you use the super nifty hotkey ctrl-k that you leaned about in hidden tip #1. This works in Outlook as well. 3. Drag n’ drop works between the folder tree view and the message list view in your mailbox. Drag a message from your inbox to the folder where you want to put it just like you would in Outlook. Note: Drag n’ drop doesn’t work between public folders and private mailboxes While you are at it, take a look at the cool right-click context menu’s put in folder view and the folder tree. 4. The S/MIME control isn’t just for S/MIME! After you install the control you can also drag in-line attachments like pictures or documents in to the message you are composing and they are automatically inserted just like in Outlook. The coolest part of this control is that you can also drag and drop other messages in to your e-mail as attachments. Try it! First make sure the S/MIME control is installed by checking your options page and make sure it says “Reinstall” not “Install”. Then open the “Compose New Mail” form, switch back to the message list view and drag a message from you inbox to the “Compose New Mail” form and let up on your mouse button. Voila! It’s now in the body of your new mail. 5. Type-down search works in all your mail folders and makes it VERY easy to find the message you want quickly. To use type-down search order the folder by a column like “From:” then give focus to a message in the view by clicking on it once with your mouse, then quickly start typing the first name of the person. You’ll see an hour glass, and then the view will be updated with the mails from the person whose name you started to type in. 6. We don’t have a five day view like Outlook, but don’t let that stop you from looking at multiple days in the calendar. See multiple days at the same time in the calendar view by holding down the control key and clicking down on multiple days with your mouse in the month-view date picker. I just happened to pick three contiguous days, but they could be any days in the month and in any order. 7. Speed up your browsing with OWA Basic! A fact that many people miss is that OWA comes in two flavors that we call Premium and Basic. OWA Premium is the version that you get in IE 5.5 and higher, and OWA Basic is the version that you get in all other browsers. OWA Basic, while it leaves a bit to be desired aesthetically, can be very useful to use on low-bandwidth connections. If you are using OWA over a dial-up connection with high latency I strongly recommend checking “Basic” on the login page, you’ll have a much snappier experience because OWA Basic doesn’t need to download all of the thousands of lines of script that we use to make OWA Premium so “Outlook-like”. 8. Sort on multiple columns at once by holding down shift and clicking on the column headers you want to sort on. I didn’t know about this hidden feature myself until I asked our Development team for some additional hidden features. This is useful if you want to sort by multiple criteria, like Meeting Requests from John Doe. First click on the “From” column header, and then shift click on the column that has the icon in it designating mail or meeting request. Note: We do assume a secondary sort of date by default, so any time you sort by a column other than date, we sort it by the primary column, and then apply a date sorting. 9. Spell check every mail before you send it automatically! This option is available from the Options menu in OWA. Select “Spell check mail before sending” and never send a typo again! 10. Get a nicely formatted agenda view by adding this URL to your favorites: https:///exchange//calendar/?cmd=contents&part=1 This URL is used by our OWA web parts to expose calendaring functionality to SharePoint portals, but you can take advantage of it without SharePoint, just by adding this URL as a favorite to your browser or a shortcut on your desktop. - Jason Henderson
