It’s funny when we, as the final virtualization customers, get in the middle of the “virtualization war” between the competitors. Microsoft recently created a mini-site, that makes fun of VMWare and states that they are “stuck in the past” with their private cloud offering. “You can expect to see us continue to find ways to tell our story, on our own and against our competitors, especially where there is a gap between perception and facts, using ads, tweets, video, infographics, and, we hope, more than a dash of humor.”, says a Microsoft blog post. Microsoft already created the “GMail Man” video recently, stating that GMail reads every single mail message that comes through their systems, in order to create targeted ads (Google’s main source of income, let’s not forget that). It seems that there is a new flavor of cookies around. We already know that internet browsers store our “personal preferences” when we visit web pages. Every time that you go back to a web page and you’ve already told to that page to remember you, there is no need to type again your username. We also know that we can control or even we can delete cookies every now and then. But according to Wall Street Journal, there is a new form of cookies, called “Supercookies” and they’re already present to every computer. The problem is that these cookies could be used to create a profile about you and store it in a location that is not easy to find it and clear it out. Flash Player is a good example, which stores its cookies in a secret area. So how we prevent these Supercookies from being stored? Read the article on Jeremy Moskowitz, Group Policy MVP blog and follow the instructions. You will be surprised to see that even Flash Player cares about your personal data and preferences. Great news. I’ve submitted two sessions for this year’s Microsoft Sinergija 2011 and guess what: both of them are approved. It seems that there is a great need for cloud sessions, so by knowing that, I’ve submitted a session on Windows Intune and another one on Office 365. Δεν θα μπω σε τεχνικές λεπτομέρειες σχετικά με τα πλεονεκτήματα και τα μειονεκτήματα του κάθε προϊόντος. Δεν με ενδιαφέρει αυτό, στο κάτω κάτω είμαστε μια παρέα από γεροξεκούτηδες που μάθαμε με κάποιες τεχνολογίες πριν από 15 χρόνια επειδή "έτυχε"... Κάποιοι ασχολήθηκαν με Microsoft γιατί στην πρώτη τους δουλειά η εταιρία εκείνη έστηνε Microsoft. Κάποιοι άλλοι κλήθηκαν να παλέψουν με τον πρώτο τους πελάτη που είχε Linux και αναγκαστικά έμαθαν. Κάποιοι ανακάλυψαν το virtualisation τότε που οι παίκτες ήταν λιγότεροι στο παιχνίδι και ασχολήθηκαν με VMWare. Τα ξεχάσατε? Ο εκστασιασμένος παρουσιαστής έκανε καλά την δουλειά του, απλά οι γεροξεκούτηδες τόσα χρόνια με VMWare δούλευαν... Δεν πα να λες εσύ για το νέο και φοβερό Dynamic Memory; Στον επόμενο πελάτη VMWare θα βάλει γιατί αυτό ξέρει και δουλεύει. Εγώ από την άλλη και να ήθελα να ασχοληθώ με VMWare, τώρ πια δεν προλαβαίνω, αντίθετα με τις δηλώσεις του Κουκουλιέρου ότι οι Microsoft μηχανικοί πεινάνε.... Ίσως κάποιοι κινούνται στην αγορά διαφορετικά από κάποιους άλλους και δεν πεινάνε, ακόμα και αν ασχολούνται με Microsoft τεχνολογίες. Εκεί που πήγε ο Γιώργος ο Κουκουλιέρος έτυχε να μην έχουν Hyper-V, αλλά εκεί που έχω πάει εγώ έχω δει άλλα..... Περί ορέξεως λοιπόν.. κολοκυθόπιτα. Από την άλλη βάζουμε στα δίκτυα ακόμα καρφωτές IP γιατί το DHCP είναι "τεχνολογία του διαβόλου", όπως και το Active Directory που κάνει τον server να σέρνεται... Workgroup λοιπόν στη εταιρία των 60 users και δεν βαριέσαι..... Παρακαλώ λοιπόν πριν γράφετε να ξανασκέφτεστε τι γράφετε για να αποφεύγετε τους ατυχείς χαρακτηρισμούς και να υπάρχει ηρεμία στο forum. Ειδικά όσοι έχετε φάει κάποια στιγμή και στο ίδιο τραπέζι μαζί ή έχετε πιει και μια βερολινέζικη μπύρα...

Καλά μην τρελαίνεσαι κιόλας... Όταν έκανα το training για λογαριασμό της Microsoft Hellas είχα για πλάκα στημένα ADFS... Από την άλλη, ακριβώς για αυτό τον λόγο υπάρχει έδαφος για παροχή υπηρεσίας, ευκαιρία να προσφέρουμε οι γνώστες υπηρεσίες για την παραμετροποίηση στο cloud.v

Το Office 365 και το SMTP παίζει στην θύρα 587 και θέλει TLS authentication... απορώ πως δεν το έχετε αναφέρει ως τώρα...

I would like to share with you some thoughts on the next version of Hyper-V (it is supposed to be version 3.0), which will offer some great new functionality (by the way, Windows 8 it’s just the codename of the next server version and not the final name). During Worldwide Partners Conference there was a demonstration that showed a server hosting multiple VMs and we could clearly see that each VM could use 16 CPUs. We should mention that this is not the maximum number of CPUs that a virtual machine could use in Hyper-V 3.0: The new feature is called Hyper-V Replica and Microsoft's Jeff Woolsey actually performed a very good demo on that. He stated that "Today, replication is complex to configure and often requires expensive, proprietary hardware. In Windows Server 8, all you need to replicate a virtual machine from one location to another is Hyper-V and a network connection." Here is the best part. Woolsey utilized a right-click context menu to start the replication of a Virtual Machine. Μερικοί προβληματισμοί: Το παραπάνω script το τρέχεις στον Exchange. Για να απενεργοποιήσεις λογαριασμούς στο Active Directory πρέπει να κάνεις import-module ActiveDirectory. Για να μπορέσεις να το κάνεις αυτό, θα πρέπει o Exchange Server να είναι και Domain Controller, κάτι το οποίο είναι not recommended. Μήπως λοιπόν με απλά PS Scripts δεν γίνεται? Στο internet που έψαξες τι βρήκες?

The new Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2012 Beta 1 has already announced. The good thing is that you can upgrade directly to this new version if you were using MDT 2010 (which was a great free tool, by the way). What is included in this new version? Support Configuration Manager 2012 Beta 2 OS deployment Integrate MDT 2012 Beta 1 into the Configuration Manager 2012 console. Update MDT task sequences to support ConfigMgr 2012. Add support for new ConfigMgr 2012 features. Add support for new operating systems Add support for Windows ThinPC and Windows POSReady 7. Support UEFI deployments Enable MDT to deploy operating systems to computers that use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) BIOS replacement. “Deploy to VHD” support New task sequence templates have been added to support deploying a Windows 7 image into a VHD that is then configured so that the computer will boot from the VHD. Improve partitioning logic Deploy Windows using the Windows AIK-recommended partitioning schemes, while ensuring that any existing scheme continues to work as expected. Wizard look-and-feel enhancements Update the Lite Touch wizards to provide an improved appearance. There is also a new version of Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit, version 6.0 Beta can be downloaded and includes Internet Explorer 9 compatibility assessment. Microsoft Learning will release a new five-day course (40 hrs), 6433A: Planning and Implementing Windows Server 2008 Servers, which maps directly to the 70-646: PRO: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator exam. This new title will replace 6430B: Planning for Windows Server 2008 Servers, and will also include appropriate Network Infrastructure and Active Directory elements from 6431A: Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Servers and 6432A: Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Servers. It’s interesting that this new course will include topics on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Microsoft Learning stated that this new course will include real-world scenarios in the labs. Please note that courses 6430B, 6431A, and 6432A will all retire with the release of the new course 6433A in October 2011.

TechEd North America 2011 in Atlanta has already finished, and we managed to get some news from friends that have participated. During that week, a friend and a fellow MVP Mark Parris, made an interesting observation: There was no booth and no Product Team present for TMG… Is there an explanation for this? As Mark Parris says, there was a blog post by Deb Schinder that says that Microsoft has confirmed that it is not going to be shipping another full version release of TMG. Sad but probably true. Here is the original text of Deb Schinder’s blog post: “In a Gartner report titled Magic Quadrant for Secure Web Gateway, published May 25, the first thing we noticed when perusing the matrix of challengers, leaders, niche players and visionaries in the SWG space is that a prominent name is missing in action: that of Microsoft. But if you read on, you find out why. On page 5, you’ll find a statement that is likely to shock and dismay many Microsoft customers, which says that Microsoft has confirmed to Gartner that it is not going to be shipping another full version release of TMG. The report goes on to say that TMG is in sustaining mode and Microsoft doesn’t intend to compete head-to-head with other vendors in that space. The good news is that the usual five year mainstream/five year extended support lifecycle still applies. What does this mean for Microsoft in the security space? What does it mean for those organizations with current deployments of TMG? DNS specifications are documented in the RFC 882, which I think was created in 1983. Time has passed and our requirements for DNS changed. We may want to add additional information in the small UDP packets that DNS uses, but – guess what – there is no space left. Unfortunately DNS uses a small number of 1-bit flags that indicate what and how a query should work. The RFC dictates that there is space for 7 flags, and we cannot add more, because there is no space in the packet. DNS prefers to use UDP packets because they are small and can be transferred fast (there is a lot of DNS traffic in the internet). The maximum packet size is 512 bytes, based on the 80s conditions (slow connections, unreliable lines, etc). Have you ever noticed that most domain names on the internet use less than 13 DNS Servers? Even the root servers are only 13 (but there are more, don’t worry, there is a big cluster of 236 DNS Servers that makes them appear fewer). Restrictions that nowadays could be eliminated and expand DNS but… what about the transition process and compatibility? We should find a different and clever way to expand DNS to use bigger packets and still maintain compatibility with older DNS Servers. The answer is EDNS, which is described in RFC2671. EDNS is a clever mechanism that allows a DNS Server to understand if it talks to another DNS Server that supports EDNS also. If they both support EDNS, they can exchange the “magic” bigger packets and they are not limited to 512 bytes. When a EDNS-aware DNS Server queries another DNS Server, it simply adds an extra record to this request. This is a new type of a DNS record, specifically created for EDNS, called an OPT record. This is not a record like the others you already know (A, CNAME, MX). In fact you’ll never see an OPT record in a zone file, it’s more like a secret talk that DNS Servers use in order to realize if they can use EDNS or not. Let’s assume that my DNS Server, which supports EDNS, wants to get the A record of a machine called PC32 in the contoso.com domain. A DNS Server that does not support EDNS would simply ask for the record and that’s all. My DNS Server that supports EDNS will ask additional information. The first query would be: “I want you to tell me the IP address of a machine called PC32 in the contoso.com zone”, but there is a second query that would say: “Here is an OPT query for you with the value of 4000”. Practically my DNS Server is saying: “I can handle large EDNS packets, so you can send me a UDP packet up to 4000 bytes”. Here is the clever part: if the other DNS Server cannot use EDNS, will simply ignore the OPT query and respond as usual. But if the other DNS Server understands the OPT query, will reply with his own OPT value, saying something like this: “Ok I can handle large UDP packets but only up to 1024 bytes.”. So now both DNS Servers know that they can use EDNS, but the largest UDP packet can be 1024 bytes. The only problem here is that these larger packets may become fragmented (keep in mind that 512-bytes packets almost never become fragmented) and some cheap NAT routers may discard them. Some firewalls nay do the same: “if a packet is DNS and UDP and larger than 512 bytes it’s something very bad so discard it.” . In both cases we have a failed name resolution process. It’s very easy to disable and enable EDNS on Windows Server 2008 R2, simply type dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0 without a reboot. However keep in mind that this command simply prevents Server 2008 R2 from starting an EDNS conversation. If an external DNS Server starts the conversation and asks our DNS Server for a large UDP packet, our server will respond using EDNS again, so maybe it’s time to take a look at your routers and firewalls and make sure they do not block large UDP packets. Statistics say that 85% of DNS servers use EDNS already, so don’t disable EDNS on your DNS Server, it seems to be a really good feature.
