    Η τεχνολογία αυτή υπάρχει εδώ και μια δεκαετία (τουλάχιστον). Μιλάμε για την διαδικασία με την οποία κάποιο client PC κάνει dynamic updates στον DNS Server που έχετε εσωτερικά στην εταιρία σας. Με αυτόν τον τρόπο εξασφαλίζουμε ότι ο DNS Server μας (ο οποίος τυχαίνει να είναι απολύτως απαραίτητος για την συνολική καλή λειτουργία του Active Directory) είναι πλήρως ενημερωμένος, έχοντας την λίστα με όλους τους clients και τις IP διευθύνσεις τους. Όταν κάποιος υπολογιστής παίρνει νέα IP διεύθυνση από τον DHCP Server, το DHCP Client Service φροντίζει ώστε να ανανεώνει την εγγραφή στον DNS Server. Σωστά?

    Λάθος.

    Φαίνεται ότι η Microsoft αποφάσισε να το αλλάξει. Κάποια στιγμή χρονικά κοντά στα Windows Vista έγινε η αλλαγή και πλέον δεν είναι υπεύθυνο το DHCP Client Service, αλλά το DNS Client Service. Ίσως ο λόγος να ήταν ότι κάποιοι φωστήρες απενεργοποιούσαν το DHCP Client Service με την λογική ότι δεν υπάρχει DHCP Server ή δεν χρησιμοποιείται, άρα δεν μας χρειάζεται το DHCP Client Service.
    Who knows? Θα μπορούσατε πάντως να κάνετε το πείραμα, απενεργοποιώντας κάποιο από τα δύο κρίσιμα services για να δείτε τι συμβαίνει στα registrations που δέχεται ο DNS Server. Μπορείτε να δείτε και σχετικό άρθρο εδώ:

    Αυτές τις μέρες βρίσκόμουν στην Κύπρο για να κάνω μια εκπαίδευση στους Microsoft Partners σχετικά με το Microsoft Office 365. Φαίνεται λοιπόν ότι το cloud έχει κάνει αισθητή την παρουσία του εδώ, σε αντίθεση με την Ελλάδα που υποστηρίζουμε ότι η ελληνική επιχείρηση δεν θα πάει ποτέ στο σύννεφο… Και το πρόβλημα είναι ότι όχι μόνο το πιστεύουμε, αλλά κρατάμε και όλο το concept του cloud μακριά μας, λες και θα μας δαγκώσει….

    Εδώ αντίθετα έχουμε τις δικές μας απόψεις. Σε συζητήσεις που κάνω με συναδέλφους, αρκετοί μου λένε: “Τι χρειαζόμαστε την εκπαίδευση για το Office 365, αφού η Microsoft τα έχει όλα έτοιμα…” Ποια είναι τα “έτοιμα”; Με την συνδρομή σε μια cloud υπηρεσία, δεν ασχολείσαι με το αρχικό στήσιμο του software, αλλά ούτε και με το hardware. Τι γίνεται όμως από εκεί και μετά;
    Ποιος θα μεταφέρει τα Sharepoint data της εταιρίας στο SharePoint Online και πως ακριβώς θα το κάνει; Πως θα μεταφέρει τα mailboxes των χρηστών στον Exchange Online χωρίς να χαθεί τίποτα; Ποιος θα υλοποιήσει Active Directory Federation Services για να έχει η εταιρία Rich Coexistence περιβάλλον και single sign-on; Τα ερωτήματα είναι άπειρα. Και φυσικά, όπως γίνεται πάντα, οι πιο υποψιασμένοι έχουν ήδη αρχίσει να κινούνται και να βγάζουν λεφτά άπό το cloud.
    Επειδή ο τίτλος αυτού του post αναφέρεται στα Federation Services, σας παραθέτω μερικά χρήσιμα στοιχεία:

    Και φυσικά η λίστα μπορεί να συνεχιστεί….
    Βλέπετε λοιπόν ότι δεν είναι τόσο απλά τα πράγματα. Φυσικά αυτό είναι μόνο ένα από τα αντικείμενα που πρέπει να μάθετε, υπάρχουν και πολλά άλλα στην πορεία.
    Ενημερωθείτε, εκπαιδευθείτε, παρακολουθήστε τις εξελίξεις. Καλώς ή κακώς, όλοι και όλα πάνε στο cloud. Μην κάθεστε σαν απλοί παρατηρητές.     Μετά τις επιδείξεις και τα demos στην BUILD, δεν υπάρχει πια NDA για κάποιες λειτουργίες και χαρακτηριστικά του νέου Server 8, οπότε είναι ενδιαφέρον να δούμε τις εκπλήξεις (ευχάριστες) που κρύβει ο νέος Server. Ξεκινάμε λοιπόν με….
    Μέγεθος, αξιοπιστία, διαχείριση
    Μυρίζει cloud από παντού. Ακούστηκε ότι υπάρχουν βελτιώσεις στον IIS ώστε να μπορεί να φιλοξενεί έναν …σκασμό από websites, αλλά και το νέο format αρχείων VHDX που μπορούν να φτάσουν σε μεγαλύτερο μέγεθος από τα 2 Terra που είχαμε μέχρι τώρα. Η μαγική λέξη είναι multi-tenancy, που θα την ακούτε αρκετά συχνά από εδώ και πέρα. Καινούρια προσέγγιση σε ότι αφορά το high availability, νέος Server Manager που μας δείχνει κάποιες πονηρές λειτουργίες, όπως το εύκολο και φτηνό teaming με κάρτες δικτύου, αλλά και το Hyper-V replication, όπου για πλάκα στέλνουμε ένα virtual machine στον διπλανό server.
    Η τάση της Microsoft εδώ και κάποιο καιρό είναι να μας πείσει ότι πλέον διαχειριζόμαστε services και όχι ανεξάρτητους servers, για αυτό με τα έτοιμα 2300 powershell cmdlets μπορούμε να κάνουμε τα πάντα σε 100 servers ταυτόχρονα. Αντίστοιχη εικόνα έχουμε και από τον Server Manager, όπου αναφέρει την δυνατότητα δημιουργίας Server Groups, ώστε να τους διαχειριζόμαστε πιο αποτελεματικά.

    Server Core… αλλά με γραφικό περιβάλλον?
    Δουλεύετε κανονικά στο γνωστό περιβάλλον του Server Core, αλλά αν εκνευριστείτε από εκείνη την εντολή των … 5 γραμμών που την γράφετε λάθος, πατάτε τον διακόπτη και έχετε Server Manager με γραφικό περιβάλλον για να κάνετε την δουλειά σας.
    Και ο Server Manager με …. Metro!

    Προς το παρόν δεν έχουμε την δυνατότητα εξαγωγής του Powershell κώδικα από τον Server Manager, όπως γίνεται από την κονσόλα του Exchange 2010, ή και τώρα πια από το Active Directory Administrative Center (ναι, επιτέλους γίνεται). Πολύ καλό όμως είναι το χαρακτηριστικό το οποίο σας επιτρέπει να αγνοήσετε μόνιμα error messages στον Event Viewer, όπως πχ. εκείνο το μήνυμα για τον εξωτερικό time server ή για τον printer driver σε κάποιο terminal session. Έχουμε εμπεδώσει το error, δεν θέλουμε να το βλέπουμε συνέχεια.
    DNSSEC με υποστήριξη για NSEC3, αφού μελλοντικά οι ζώνες μας θα πρέπει να έχουν ψηφιακή υπογραφή και το NSEC3 δεν υποστηριζόταν στον Windows Server 2008 R2 και στο DNS.
    Δώστε DHCP Failover Clustering στον λαό. Φτηνό, εύκολο και πρακτικό. Και φυσικά δεν χρειάζεται SAN!
    DirectAccess με ένα κλικ. Τώρα μπορείτε να το αποκτήσετε και εσείς στο δίκτυό σας, χωρίς να χρειάζεται να γίνετε αλκοολικοί για να το κάνετε να παίξει, ακόμα και αν δεν έχετε IPv6 σεταρισμένο, φροντίζει για όλα.
    IP Address Management με νέο εργαλείο για να ξέρετε τι σας γίνεται με τις στατικές IP που βάζετε στους servers. Δουλεύει με network discovery τεχνολογίες.

    Active Directory σε άλλο επίπεδο
    DCPROMO εξ’ αποστάσεως, για να μην ξενιτεύεστε εσείς που έχετε πολλές γεωγραφικές τοποθεσίες, ο Server Manager φροντίζει για εσάς. Μπορείτε επίσης τώρα πια να κάνετε τους DC σας virtual άφοβα, ακόμα να παίζετε και με snapshots, χωρίς τον φόβο των lingering objects και του USN Rollback. Το λειτουργικό αντιλαμβάνεται πλεόν σε τι υποδομή βρίσκεται και φροντίζει για την σωστή λειτουργία. Μπορείτε επίσης να κλωνοποιήσετε άφοβα τους DC σας, μια καταπληκτική ευκαιρία να στήσετε ένα lab που θα είναι…. πιστό αντίγραφο της υποδομής της εταιρίας σας.
    Ανέφερα πριν ότι έχουμε βελτιώσεις στο Active Directory Administrative Center, το οποίο μέχρι τώρα δεν μπορούσε να κάνει ότι και το Active Directory Users & Computers. Τώρα πια υπάρχει μέχρι και το AD Recycle Bin με γραφικό περιβάλλον, για όσους βαριούνται να γράφουν powershell cmdlets για να επαναφέρουν το user account του Διευθύνοντα Συμβούλου που έσβησαν κατά λάθος…

    Dynamic Access Control (DAC)
    Εδώ σοβαρεύει η κατάσταση, καθώς φεύγουμε από το παραδοσιακό μοντέλο των permissions με users και groups και ασχολούμαστε πλέον με tags στα αντικείμενα του Active Directory, τα οποία φυσικά υπάρχουν εδώ και αρκετό καιρό, αλλά δεν τα χρησιμοποιούσαμε.
    Το σενάριο έχει ως εξής: θέλω κάποια συγκεκριμένα αρχεία να είναι προσβάσιμα μόνο από τους εργαζόμενους που δουλεύουν στον 3ο όροφο μιας εταιρίας, αλλά ταυτόχρονα να είναι προσβάσιμα μόνο από συγκεκριμένα workstations που τα θεωρώ secure.
    Για να παίξει το σενάριο χρειάζεται τουλάχιστον ένας Windows 8 DC και ένας Windows 8 File Server, επιτρέποντάς μας να δημιουργήσουμε πολύπλοκα σενάρια πρόσβασης σε αρχεία. Ίσως στις μικρές εταιρίες να μην έχει τόσο εφαρμογή, αλλά στις μεγαλύτερες που σήμερα έχουν περισσότερα groups από ότι χρήστες, θα είναι ένας νέος τρόπος εφαρμογής permissions. Τα κλασσικά permissions θα συνεχίσουν να δουλεύουν, αλλά θα έχουμε την δυνατότητα να εφαρμόσουμε DAC. Και επειδή μια σμπαθέστατη συναδελφος θα ρωτήσει τι functional level χρειαζόμαστε για το DAC, ΔΕΝ θα χρειάζεται το WS8 functional level.
    Το ερώτημα είναι “ποιος θα κάνει όλο αυτό το tagging?” Θα υπάρχει τρόπος χρησιμοποιώντας conditions, ώστε τα αρχεία μας να κατηγοριοποιούνται αυτόματα.
     
    Hyper-V σε File Server? Πολύ έξυπνο. Αποθηκεύστε τα VHD σε έναν file server και πείτε στους Hyper-V Servers πού βρίσκεται το VHD. Έχετε έτσι ένα φτηνό failover σύστημα, αρκεί όλα τα συστατικά να είναι Windows Server 8 και να έχουν το νέο δικτυακό πρωτόκολλο SMB 2.2. Και φυσικά μην ξεχνάτε το Hyper-V replication που μεταφέρει το Virtual Machine από τον ένα Hyper-V στον διπλανό με μια απλή IP σύνδεση.
    Φυσικά το γνωστό Failover Clustering με CSVs υπάρχει, ενώ τώρα έχουμε την δυνατότητα να συμπεριλάβουμε και file server shares. Ακούσαμε επίσης ότι βελτιώνεται και το Single Instance Store, με καλύτερες και αποτελεσματικές δυνατότητες De-Duplication.
    Η μόνη απορία που έχω είναι αν τελικά θα έχουμε Standard και Enteprise εκδόσεις, αλλά και τι θα περιλαμβάνεται μέσα στην “φτηνή” Standard έκδοση….
    Φυσικά όσοι παρακολουθείτε από εδώ και πέρα μαζί μου σεμινάρια σε Windows Server 2008 R2, θα έχουμε και αρκετό περιεχόμενο για τον Windows 8 Server, ότι τουλάχιστον δεν καλύπτεται από NDA, ώστε να κάνουμε τις συγκρίσεις άμεσα μέσα στο μάθημα.

    Windows 8 Fever….

    Do you want to know how many Developer Preview downloads Microsoft had so far? During the first 24 hours of its availability, 500.000 copies have been downloaded, indicating that people are already excited by this version.
    What about the schedule? Take the schedule of Windows 7 and copy-paste it. Although Microsoft doesn’t want to say anything about this, we’ve already knew that we should have the final version after summer 2012. So if you make some simple thoughts, you can guess that we’ll have a beta version around January or February (maybe in time for CES), a RC version in April and a RTM in July.
    My sources in Microsoft tell me however that starting from the beta version, we’ll see a lot of changes. It is important to understand that THIS IS NOT A BETA, it is an “alpha” version with a lot of features missing. Everything is subject to change, even the appearance of this OS, so stay tuned and follow my blog or my twitter account at http://www.twitter.com/spanougakis/. Even the name of this OS might change, and there is a simple reason for that: if you abbreviate the name and make it, let’s say, W8, it can easily be pronounced “W-ait”, which is not a good name for Microsoft….

    Booting a Windows 8 machine from VHD in Windows 7
    This is probably a good choice if you want to play with Windows 8, without having to sacrifice a physical system. Of course you could use Hyper-V, but I believe it’s better to use real hardware, just to see how a real PC interacts with drivers.
    Just make sure that you have enough space on your disk, around 40 or 50 GB. You can simply create a VHD disk in Windows 7 by using the Disk Management Console:


    The next step is to start your Windows 8 installation using the ISO file that the whole planet already downloaded, so start your computer and go on with the installation. At some point you’ll see the screen that prompts you to select a hard disk for the installation. Remember, we want to install Windows 8 on the VHD disk we’ve already created.So at this point DO NOT SELECT a hard disk but hit Shift-F10 to go to a command prompt.
    At this command prompt type DISKPART and then the following commands:
    DISKPART> select vdisk file=d:\VM\Win8.vhd
    DISKPART> attach vdisk
    Now by pressing Alt+Tab you focus back to the disks selection window, hit refresh and you’ll see that your new VHD disk is listed. If you select to install Windows 8 on this disk, you’ll get an error message that Windows cannot be installed on this disk, but you can proceed with the installation. After some time you’ll asked to reboot your machine, so please do it.
    And here is where the good part begins…..
    If you remember the procedure that we did in order to boot from a VHD a Windows 7 machine, you already know that we have to play with BCDEdit and add an entry in the boot manager. You can go back in time and read an excellent article by Nasos Kladakis here, where he explains the whole procedure.
    But this not the case in Windows 8, because this new OS noticed that I want to boot from a VHD and already created automatically an entry in the boot manager, saving a lot of work!
    So as soon as the whole procedure finishes, we find ourselves looking at the brand-new boot loader:

    It is graphical and it is a beauty! Do not forget to click on “Change defaults or choose other options” at the bottom of the screen…

    Αρκετοί από εσάς παρακολούθησαν το χθεσινό keynote στην BUILD στην Καλιφόρνια, όπου για πρώτη φορά ήρθαμε σε επαφή με τα Windows 8, τουλάχιστον με την έκδοση που δόθηκε στους developers, αλλά επειδή μαζί με τα ξερά καίγονται και τα χλωρά, σήμερα την κατεβάζει όλος ο πλανήτης.
    Σε παλιότερο post είχα αναφερθεί στα βασικά χαρακτηριστικά που περιμένουμε να δούμε, αλλά τώρα πια έχουμε εγκατεστημένη την pre-beta έκδοση, ενώ πρέπει να αναφέρω ότι αυτό το post που διαβάζετε γράφτηκε μέσα στα Windows 8. Φυσικά δεν περιμέναμε μια τέτοια έκδοση να είναι χωρίς κολλήματα, για αυτό και αποθήκευα το κείμενο που έγραφα πάρα πολύ συχνά.
    Προτείνω ανεπιφύλακτα να την κατεβάσετε και να την εγκαταστήσετε σε κάποιο PC δοκιμαστικά, ώστε να πάρετε μια ιδέα για το τι θα δούμε στην τελική έκδοση.
    Η εγκατάσταση είναι παρόμοια με αυτή των Windows 7, αλλά με μια σημαντική διαφορά: για να κάνετε logon στο PC σας χρησιμοποιείτε το Windows Live ID σας, δίνοντάς σας μια εξαιρετική δυνατότητα. Συγχρονισμός όλων των προσωπικών ρυθμίσεών μας στο SkyDrive για εύκολη ανάκτηση και χρήση σε πολλά PC ταυτόχρονα. Η λογική είναι απλή: όπου και να συνδεθώ, βλέπω το ίδιο ακριβώς περιβάλλον. Πολύ έξυπνο.

    Θα βρείτε επίσης διάφορα διακοσμητικά στοιχεία που προσφέρουν πρόσθετη πληροφορία, όπως η εφαρμογή για τον καιρό (δεν βρήκα πουθενά να αλλάξω τη ρύθμιση για βαθμούς Κελσίου στη θερμοκρασία):

    Πολύ όμορφο είναι το animation του κύματος που σκάει στην παραλία (πρέπει να το δείτε για να το εκτιμήσετε).
    Το social networking έχει την τιμητική του. Ενσωματωμένες εφαρμογές για Facebook και Twitter,


    Οι εφαρμογές φαίνονται σε μια λίστα που μοιάζει πολύ με αυτή του Windows Phone:

    Φυσικά υπάρχει και η συμβατότητα προς τα πίσω με το κλασσικό desktop, κάτι που θα μειώσει την ανάγκη για εκπαίδευση σε business περιβάλλοντα:

    Παρατηρήστε ότι το κουμπί Start έχει αλλάξει και δεν εμφανίζει πια το γνωστό menu, αλλά μας γυρνάει πίσω στο Metro περιβάλλον.
    Παρατηρήστε επίσης ότι υπάρχει ribbon σε όλα τα παράθυρα:

    Μεγάλη ανανέωση και στον Task Manager με πολλές σημαντικές πληροφορίες για το σύστημα και τις επιδόσεις του:

    Windows Intune is a great option for companies that want to keep their systems secure and updated, without the need to install a costly infrastructure on premises. It costs 11 euros per month and per device, with the additional benefit of having Windows 7 Enterprise installed on desktops, and also get a copy of MDOP (with an extra charge of 1 euro).
    MDOP includes a lot of good stuff, including the App-V product, giving you the option to run applications via streaming, which was previously possible to get it via a Software Assurance program. Windows Intune brought all the benefits of MDOP practically to every company.
    Windows Intune version 2.0 is now in beta version and a new feature came out: we’ll have the ability to “push” software to desktops, more or less like we did by using Group Policy Objects.
    It works more or less like this: you specify the installation files and Intune uploads them to a cloud storage (Windows Azure) that is reserved for Intune customers. Available disk space is now 2GB, as you can see in the screenshot below:

    You can clearly see that we want to install Adobe Reader and Microsoft Lync 2010 client to our desktops, as seen below:

    By using computer groups we can assign software to computers:

    It’s funny when we, as the final virtualization customers, get in the middle of the “virtualization war” between the competitors. Microsoft recently created a mini-site, that makes fun of VMWare and states that they are “stuck in the past” with their private cloud offering.
    “You can expect to see us continue to find ways to tell our story, on our own and against our competitors, especially where there is a gap between perception and facts, using ads, tweets, video, infographics, and, we hope, more than a dash of humor.”, says a Microsoft blog post.
    Microsoft already created the “GMail Man” video recently, stating that GMail reads every single mail message that comes through their systems, in order to create targeted ads (Google’s main source of income, let’s not forget that).

    It seems that there is a new flavor of cookies around. We already know that internet browsers store our “personal preferences” when we visit web pages. Every time that you go back to a web page and you’ve already told to that page to remember you, there is no need to type again your username.
    We also know that we can control or even we can delete cookies every now and then. But according to Wall Street Journal, there is a new form of cookies, called “Supercookies” and they’re already present to every computer.
    The problem is that these cookies could be used to create a profile about you and store it in a location that is not easy to find it and clear it out. Flash Player is a good example, which stores its cookies in a secret area.
    So how we prevent these Supercookies from being stored? Read the article on Jeremy Moskowitz, Group Policy MVP blog and follow the instructions.
    You will be surprised to see that even Flash Player cares about your personal data and preferences.

    I would like to share with you some thoughts on the next version of Hyper-V (it is supposed to be version 3.0), which will offer some great new functionality (by the way, Windows 8 it’s just the codename of the next server version and not the final name).
    During Worldwide Partners Conference there was a demonstration that showed a server hosting multiple VMs and we could clearly see that each VM could use 16 CPUs. We should mention that this is not the maximum number of CPUs that a virtual machine could use in Hyper-V 3.0:

     
    The new feature is called Hyper-V Replica and Microsoft's Jeff Woolsey actually performed a very good demo on that. He stated that "Today, replication is complex to configure and often requires expensive, proprietary hardware. In Windows Server 8, all you need to replicate a virtual machine from one location to another is Hyper-V and a network connection."
    Here is the best part. Woolsey utilized a right-click context menu to start the replication of a Virtual Machine. Take a look at the following pictures and remember that this feature will be included in Windows Server 8 (?) FOR FREE:

    The new Microsoft Deployment Toolkit (MDT) 2012 Beta 1 has already announced. The good thing is that you can upgrade directly to this new version if you were using MDT 2010 (which was a great free tool, by the way).
    What is included in this new version?
    Support Configuration Manager 2012 Beta 2 OS deployment
    Integrate MDT 2012 Beta 1 into the Configuration Manager 2012 console. Update MDT task sequences to support ConfigMgr 2012. Add support for new ConfigMgr 2012 features.
    Add support for new operating systems
    Add support for Windows ThinPC and Windows POSReady 7.
    Support UEFI deployments
    Enable MDT to deploy operating systems to computers that use the Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) BIOS replacement.
    “Deploy to VHD” support
    New task sequence templates have been added to support deploying a Windows 7 image into a VHD that is then configured so that the computer will boot from the VHD.
    Improve partitioning logic
    Deploy Windows using the Windows AIK-recommended partitioning schemes, while ensuring that any existing scheme continues to work as expected.
    Wizard look-and-feel enhancements
    Update the Lite Touch wizards to provide an improved appearance.
    Improve user state migration logic
    Enhance the user state migration process to provide additional flexibility.

    Microsoft Learning will release a new five-day course (40 hrs), 6433A: Planning and Implementing Windows Server 2008 Servers, which maps directly to the 70-646: PRO: Windows Server 2008, Server Administrator exam. This new title will replace 6430B: Planning for Windows Server 2008 Servers, and will also include appropriate Network Infrastructure and Active Directory elements from 6431A: Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2008 Network Infrastructure Servers and 6432A: Managing and Maintaining Windows Server 2008 Active Directory Servers.
    It’s interesting that this new course will include topics on Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1. Microsoft Learning stated that this new course will include real-world scenarios in the labs. Please note that courses 6430B, 6431A, and 6432A will all retire with the release of the new course 6433A in October 2011.

    No more TMG?

    TechEd North America 2011 in Atlanta has already finished, and we managed to get some news from friends that have participated. During that week, a friend and a fellow MVP Mark Parris, made an interesting observation: There was no booth and no Product Team present for TMG… Is there an explanation for this?
    As Mark Parris says, there was a blog post by Deb Schinder that says that Microsoft has confirmed that it is not going to be shipping another full version release of TMG. Sad but probably true.
    Here is the original text of Deb Schinder’s blog post:
    “In a Gartner report titled Magic Quadrant for Secure Web Gateway, published May 25, the first thing we noticed when perusing the matrix of challengers, leaders, niche players and visionaries in the SWG space is that a prominent name is missing in action: that of Microsoft. But if you read on, you find out why.
    On page 5, you’ll find a statement that is likely to shock and dismay many Microsoft customers, which says that Microsoft has confirmed to Gartner that it is not going to be shipping another full version release of TMG. The report goes on to say that TMG is in sustaining mode and Microsoft doesn’t intend to compete head-to-head with other vendors in that space. The good news is that the usual five year mainstream/five year extended support lifecycle still applies.
    What does this mean for Microsoft in the security space? What does it mean for those organizations with current deployments of TMG? I anticipate many questions (and, I hope, some answers) in the weeks to come, and I’ll be taking a closer look at this development next week in my Microsoft InSights column over on TechRepublic, so stay tuned.”

    DNS specifications are documented in the RFC 882, which I think was created in 1983. Time has passed and our requirements for DNS changed. We may want to add additional information in the small UDP packets that DNS uses, but – guess what – there is no space left. Unfortunately DNS uses a small number of 1-bit flags that indicate what and how a query should work. The RFC dictates that there is space for 7 flags, and we cannot add more, because there is no space in the packet.
    DNS prefers to use UDP packets because they are small and can be transferred fast (there is a lot of DNS traffic in the internet). The maximum packet size is 512 bytes, based on the 80s conditions (slow connections, unreliable lines, etc). Have you ever noticed that most domain names on the internet use less than 13 DNS Servers? Even the root servers are only 13 (but there are more, don’t worry, there is a big cluster of 236 DNS Servers that makes them appear fewer). Restrictions that nowadays could be eliminated and expand DNS but… what about the transition process and compatibility? We should find a different and clever way to expand DNS to use bigger packets and still maintain compatibility with older DNS Servers.
    The answer is EDNS, which is described in RFC2671. EDNS is a clever mechanism that allows a DNS Server to understand if it talks to another DNS Server that supports EDNS also. If they both support EDNS, they can exchange the “magic” bigger packets and they are not limited to 512 bytes.
    When a EDNS-aware DNS Server queries another DNS Server, it simply adds an extra record to this request. This is a new type of a DNS record, specifically created for EDNS, called an OPT record. This is not a record like the others you already know (A, CNAME, MX). In fact you’ll never see an OPT record in a zone file, it’s more like a secret talk that DNS Servers use in order to realize if they can use EDNS or not.
    Let’s assume that my DNS Server, which supports EDNS, wants to get the A record of a machine called PC32 in the contoso.com domain. A DNS Server that does not support EDNS would simply ask for the record and that’s all. My DNS Server that supports EDNS will ask additional information. The first query would be: “I want you to tell me the IP address of a machine called PC32 in the contoso.com zone”, but there is a second query that would say: “Here is an OPT query for you with the value of 4000”. Practically my DNS Server is saying: “I can handle large EDNS packets, so you can send me a UDP packet up to 4000 bytes”. Here is the clever part: if the other DNS Server cannot use EDNS, will simply ignore the OPT query and respond as usual. But if the other DNS Server understands the OPT query, will reply with his own OPT value, saying something like this: “Ok I can handle large UDP packets but only up to 1024 bytes.”. So now both DNS Servers know that they can use EDNS, but the largest UDP packet can be 1024 bytes.
    The only problem here is that these larger packets may become fragmented (keep in mind that 512-bytes packets almost never become fragmented) and some cheap NAT routers may discard them. Some firewalls nay do the same: “if a packet is DNS and UDP and larger than 512 bytes it’s something very bad so discard it.” . In both cases we have a failed name resolution process.
    It’s very easy to disable and enable EDNS on Windows Server 2008 R2, simply type
    dnscmd /config /enableednsprobes 0
    without a reboot. However keep in mind that this command simply prevents Server 2008 R2 from starting an EDNS conversation. If an external DNS Server starts the conversation and asks our DNS Server for a large UDP packet, our server will respond using EDNS again, so maybe it’s time to take a look at your routers and firewalls and make sure they do not block large UDP packets.
    Statistics say that 85% of DNS servers use EDNS already, so don’t disable EDNS on your DNS Server, it seems to be a really good feature.
    Speaking of DNS features, in a future article we’ll talk about DNSSEC. It’s a big story, so I’m thinking of making a Server Nights presentation on this, probably in May or June so stay tuned.

    According to an article published in the Microsoft's russian virtualization team blog, the Windows 7 SP1 final build is this one: 7601.17514.101119-1850 and will be made available to OEMs these days. Recently we got the update KB976902 that it seems is a prerequisite necessary to install and remove any service packs to all versions of Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2. Another indication that we should expect SP1 to be available soon is that Microsoft made available in November a Service Pack Blocker Tool for download. This usually happens around two months before the official release.

     
    So what's going on? Is it true that the SP1 RTM is now available?
     
    According to the Windows Team Blog, SP1 will be available by March 31, 2011, but this was old news. Everybody expected to have SP1 ready by this date. The russian post mentioned above first stated that SP1 will be made available to OEMs, but if you look at the end of the post, you could read in plain English: "Microsoft has not released SP1 to OEMs at this time, though we are on track for a Q1 release, as we previously announced.  The comments made in this blog entry included some inaccuracies."
    Clearly this was a last minute update to the original post. So guys these are the news on SP1, I think we'll have to wait a little more for the Dynamic Memory feature on Hyper-V.

    Τελικά έχουμε αναφερθεί σε αυτό, το έχουμε παρουσιάσει αρκετές φορές, το στήνουμε κατά την διάρκεια του σεμιναρίου 6422 για το Hyper-V, αλλά δεν το είχαμε καταγράψει σε video.
