Description:

The NCI Agency was formed in 2012 with the 24/7 mission of connecting the Alliance by, defending its networks, providing critical CIS capabilities to NATO, and the top priority of supporting NATO operations. We offer our interns hands-on experience in all areas of study including engineering, human resources, communications, and computer science.

As an intern, you will have the chance to learn from subject matter experts, and the opportunity to work on projects that are integral to the operation of the Alliance.

With this opportunity we are offering two internships (Big Data and Scenario Data Creator) in The Hague within our Cyber Security (CS) Service Line responsible for the planning and executing all lifecycle management activities for cyber security.

Internship description

The Cyber Security Service Line provides specialist cyber security-related services covering the spectrum of scientific, technical, acquisition, operations, maintenance, and sustainment support, throughout the lifecycle of NATO Information Communications and Technology, enabling secure conduct of the Alliance's operations and business in the NNEC environment and in the context of NATO's Command, Control, Communications, Computers, Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (C4ISR).

Cyber Security provides cyber security services to NCI Agency customers and users, as well as to all other elements of the Agency, including all Service Lines, Programme Offices, CIS Support Units/Elements, and the Agency Ops Centre.

Cyber Security is responsible for providing the broad spectrum of services in the following specialist security areas: CIS Security, Cyber Defence, Information Assurance, Computer Security & Communications Security.

In executing its responsibilities, the CS SL provides support to the development and implementation of cyber security-related policy, strategy, and provides lifecycle security risk management services for all NATO ICT.

Cyber Security leads in the development of new capabilities and innovation in cyber security. Cyber Security incorporates the NCIRC (Computer Incident Response Capability) Technical Centre, providing specialist services to prevent, detect, respond to and recover from cyber security incidents.

The Big Data Intern will be responsible for the following:

##Investigation of data fusion mechanisms for cyber security;

##Implementation and validation of data fusion mechanisms;

##Installation and configuration of software tools and databases.

 

The Scenario Data Creator intern will be responsible for the following:

##Investigation of scenarios and data sets for cyber security;

##Creation and modification of scenarios for validation of situation awareness and decision support tools;

##Creation and modification of data sets to support the cyber security scenarios;

##Installation and configuration of software tools, virtualized environment and databases.

 

Who are we looking for?

 

You will be currently studying towards a university-level degree in Computer Science, Physics, or similar or be recent university graduates in one of those disciplines (degree obtained within the last 12 months).

 

The Big Data Intern will also have:

 

##Good knowledge of Linux operating system;

##Good Knowledge of data analytics and at least one of the data analysis environments (e.g. R, RapidMiner, KNIME);

##Basic knowledge of no-SQL databases;

##Basic knowledge of cloud technology;

##Basic knowledge of programming in at least one programming language: C/C++, C#, java, Python.

The Scenario Data Creator intern will also have:

##Good knowledge of Windows and Linux operating system;

##Good knowledge of at least one data management tool (e.g.: DBMS, KNIME, RapidMiner)

##Good knowledge of open source cyber security tools, including active and passive network monitoring tools, penetration testing tools, network protocol analyzers (e.g., Snort, OpenVAS, Wireshark, Metasploit);

##Good knowledge of scripting in at least two languages (e.g.:Python, Perl, PowerShell, bash)
##Basic knowledge of vulnerability databases and standards (e.g., NVD, MITRE standards, STIX);

##Basic knowledge of network protocols (e.g., TCP, UDP, HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, SSH);

##Good understanding of network architectures and devices (e.g., routers, switches, firewalls, subnets);

##Basic ability to configure and manage virtualized environments.

Language skills:

Most of the work of the NCI Agency is conducted in English therefore a thorough knowledge of English, both written and spoken, is essential.

 

  
Eligibility Criteria

##Nationality: application is limited to nationals of NATO member nations.
##Qualification: you must be currently studying towards a university-level degree or be recent university graduates (degree obtained within the last 12 months).
##Language: you must be proficient in the use of the English language, both written and oral.

Compensation

 

You will be compensated at a fixed rate of €800 per month, based on 38 hours work per week. The Agency will also compensate travel expenses incurred upon taking up and returning to their home country upon completion of the internship (up to a maximum of €1000 in total).

 

Duration of Internship

 

In principle, internships will last between 3 to 10 months and may commence at any point during the calendar year.
