    Μια πολύ καλή εφαρμογή για ISO burning είναι το CDBurnerXP (η οποία πρόσφατα γράφτηκε από την αρχή και θέλει .NET framework). Freeware αλλά υποστηρίζει και Blu-Ray ή HD-DVDs! Δημιουργεί ISOs, φτιάχνει Audio-CDs χωρίς κενά, διαβάζει M3U ή WPL playlists. Η τελευταία έκδοση παίζει πλέον με Vista και επειδή είναι γραμμένη σε .NET είναι μόνο 2 ΜΒ.

    Για τα Vista ένας πολύ γρήγορος τρόπος για να γράψετε ένα ISO image σε δισκάκι είναι το freeware BurnCDCC  από την TeraByte Unlimited. Είναι η εταιρεία που έχει βγάλει τα BootIt Next Generation και Image for Windows/DOS/Linux. Δεν χρειάζετε να εγκαταστήσετε τίποτα, γιατί τρέχετε απλά το EXE (μόνο 144K) που μπορείτε αν το έχετ ακόμη και σε φλασάκι.

    Πάντως για να φτιάξω ένα ISO αρχείο δεν έχω βρει κάτι καλύτερο (μέχρι σήμερα γιατί κάθε μέρα μαθαίνουμε και κάτι νέο) από το ISO Buster.

    Αν δεν μπορείτε να καταλάβετε γιατί ενώ έχετε πολύ κάρτα γραφικών, κάποιο άλλο PC με μικρότερες επιδόσεις έχει υψηλότερη βαθμολόγια και διάφορα άλλα "περίεργα", διαβάστε εδώ: Windows Experience Index: An In-Depth Look

    Το HTC Touch HD είναι διαθέσιμο από την Expansys οπότε έρχεται σύντομα και από τα μέρη μας. Καταπληκτική οθόνη και βύσμα ακουστικών 3.5 mm. Επιτέλους! Με 3.8” οθόνη αφής (ενδεικτικά το iPhone έχει 3.5”) και HSDPA/WCDMA, Wi-Fi b/g, GPS και A-GPS καθώς και  μια 5 megapixel κάμερα (με βίντεο φυσικά). http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=173502&parnter=uknews

    Δεν μας αφορά άμεσα αλλά δείχνει την κατεύθυνση: Η Scartel (Yota) από την Ρωσία και η HTC ανακοίνωσαν το HTC MAX 4G, το πρώτο "τηλέφωνο" GSM/WiMAX. Αρχικά είχε διαρρεύσει σαν HTC T8290. Κάτι ανάμεσα σε Touch Diamond και Touch HD, έχει οθόνη 3.8", ανάλυση 800 x 480 και WiFi/Bluetooth.
    Me to WiMAX, η Yota παρέχει υπηρεσίες video on demand με 23 channels μέχρι το τέλος του 2008. και με την δυνατότητα TV-out που έχει η συσκευή, οι σύντροφοι θα μπορούν να δουν την αγαπημένη τους σειρά σε μεγάλη οθόνη.     Έγινε και αυτό: Τι είναι ασφαλές και προστατευμένο; Το Linux (τουλάχιστον έτσι λένε). Τι είναι ελεγμένο και σταθερό; Το λογισμικό open-source. Άρα τι θα λέγατε για το Android; Rock solid; Ίσως, γιατί εμγανίστηκε ένα bug που μας άφησε άφωνους. H έκδοση RC29 (και οι προηγούμενες) του G1 "διαβάζει" ότι γράφουμε (στην κυριολεξία ότι γράφουμε) οπουδήποτε και προσπαθεί να εκτελέσει το κείμενο σαν εντολή linux. Γράφεις κάτι στον browser ή στο email ή σε κάποιο text box και αυτό εκτελείται με superuser permissions... Αν δεν μας πιστεύετε, βρείτε μια συσκευή, γράψτε κάπου "reboot" πατήστε το enter και δείτε τι γίνεται. Είπαμε να μας δίνουν δυνατότητες στα smartphones αλλά όχι και σε τέτοιο επίπεδο. Η Google έβγαλε γρήγορα ένα fix για το RC30 αλλά αυτό με τρόμαξε πολύ. Εσάς; Τέτοιο desktop λειτουργικό θέλουν να βγάλουν; Και γκρινιάζουν για τα Vista;

    Ποιά είναι η νέα μόδα; Προβολείς παλάμης. Στην κυριολεξία. Το Expansys έχει 3-4 μοντέλα αλλά μου έκανε ιδιαίτερη εντύπωση ο Aiptek Pocket Cinema V 10 Pico Projector. Με την νέα τεχνολογία LCoS (Liquid Crystal on Silicon) και λευκό LED σαν πηγή φωτός φτάσαμε στα 100 γραμμάρια (χωρίς την μπαταρία αλλά τι μας νοιάζει)! Προβάλει μέχρι και 50” εικόνα, απόσταση προβολής από 21 έως 180 εκ., έχει AV-out και ενσωματωμένη μνήμη 1GB flash memory και παίρνει SD/MMC/MS Pro κάρτες. Παίζει προς το παρόν μόνο αρχεία JPEG και MPEG4 αλλά οι υπόλοιποι της 3M και της Misc συνδέονται κανονικά και με υπολογιστή.     H Sony έβγαλε στην αγορά των εξαρτημάτων έναν νέο τύπο αισθητήρα CMOS για κινητά τηλέφωνα (και PDAs) με ανάλυση 12.25 megapixels! Έβγαλε και έναν με 8.11 megapixels αλλά σιγά μην βγάζουμε τον Γιωργάκη μόνο με 8 εκατομύρια τελίτσες.     H HP ανακοίνωσε δύο νέες συσκευές με Windows Mobile 6.1. Το HP Ipaq Voice Messenger και το Data Messenger με GPS, WiFi, 3G και 3.1 megapixel camera. Υποστηρίζεται και από τις δύο Micro SD και Micro USB για φόρτιση. Περισσότερες πληροφορίες εδώ:

    Κάτι φαίνεται να κινείται στα Windows Mobile. Όπως με κάθε νέα έκδοση τα τελευταία χρόνια, έτσι και φέτος τα Windows Mobile 6.5 μάλλον θα διατεθούν στους κατασκευαστές τον Απρίλιο του 2009 και περιμένουμε τις πρώτες συσκευές με 6.5 τον Σεπτέμβριο (ίσως και μέσα στο καλοκαίρι). Σημαντικό χαρακτηριστικό των 6.5 είναι ο Internet Explorer 6 με υποστήριξη Flash, Silverlight και Javascript και συμβατότητα με το σύνολο σχεδόν των websites. Ίσως και νέοι τρόποι αλληλεπίδρασης με την συσκευή.
    Η Mary Jo (δεν ξέρω πιο αξιόπιστο άτομο των media σε θέματα Microsoft) από άγνωστες πηγές της αναφέρει ότι οι "δοκιμαστές" θα έχουν τα Windows Mobile 7 το Νοέμβριο και του χρόνου τον Απρίλιο θα μπορούμε να έχουμε συσκευές (μάλλον το γνωστό μοντέλο, δηλαδή τον Απρίλιο release to OEMs και αργότερα συσκευές στο ράφι). Δεν με χαλάει η τόση αναμονή (που έχει αρχίσει εδώ και 3 χρόνια) αρκεί να φτιάξουν κάτι που θα σπάει στους δεσμούς με τα προβλήματα του παρελθόντος. Κάποια αλλαγή στο μέγεθος του Office 2007 Ribbon ή Windows 7 Taskbar μπορούμε να έχουμε που θα αλλάζει τον τρόπο που δουλεύουμε; Δεν γίνεται να έχουμε 800χ480 ανάλυση και να έχουμε μείνει στο start μενού του 2000. Άλλη εποχή τότε και άλλη τώρα. Τα Skybox / Skyline / Skymarket θα είναι χρήσιμα αλλά δεν είναι πρωτοπόρες λειτουργίες.
    Παράλληλα συμβαίνουν και άλλα πράγματα που δείχνουν προς την σωστή κατεύθυνση. Η Nvidia ετοιμάζει chip all-in-one και συσκευή για τη Microsoft. To Nvidia Tegra θα είναι κάτι σαν OMAP και Snapdragon αλλά σε στενή συνεργασία με τη Microsoft. Θυμίζουμε ότι παλιότερα η Microsoft ανέπτυσε την hardware πλατφόρμα για τα Pocket PCs και τα πρώτα Smartphones και οι κατασκευαστές δούλευαν και επέκτειναν την πλατφόρμα αυτή. Στη συνέχεια, με βασικό παίκτη την HTC, τα ηνία τα πήραν οι OEMs (σε συνεργασία με τις εταιρείες κινητής τηλεφωνίας) με τα σημερινά αποτελέσματα.
    Το καλύτερο είναι ότι εν μέσω οικονομικής κρίσης και απολύσεων, η Microsoft αναδιατάσει τις δυνάμεις της στα Windows Mobile φέρνοντας στην ομάδα επιτυχημένα στελέχη από άλλα τμήματα. Το προηγούμενο αφεντικό του product group φεύγει μετά από 21 χρόνια στην εταιρεία για πιο χαλαρή ζωή σαν καθηγητής σε πανεπιστήμιο.
    Να δούμε τι θα μας φέρει η Βαρκελώνη σε λίγες μέρες. Όπως έλεγα και παλιότερα είναι καλό να υπάρχει ισχυρός ανταγωνισμός. Όλοι στρώνονται στην δουλειά και κερδισμένοι είμαστε εμείς...

    Fault Tolerant Heap

    Στα Windows 7 υπάρχει ένα νέο Fault Tolerant Heap, μια ειδική περιοχή της μνήμης (αρκετά low-level) που “καταλαβαίνει” πότε έρχεται ένα crash και απομονώνει την εφαρμογή με το πρόβλημα πριν δημιουργήσει άλλα προβλήματα στο σύστημα. Τελικά μέρα με τη μέρα θα μαθαίνουμε και κάτι για τα 7…

    Description

    The Fault Tolerant Heap (FTH) is a subsystem of Windows 7 responsible for monitoring application crashes and autonomously applying mitigations to prevent future crashes on a per application basis. For the vast majority of users, FTH will function with no need for intervention or change on their part. However, in some cases, application developers and software testers may need to override the default behavior of this system.

    Solution

    Viewing Fault Tolerant Heap activity

    Fault Tolerant Heap logs information when the service starts, stops, or starts mitigating problems for a new application. To view this information, follow these steps:


    Click on the start menu
    Right-click Computer and choose Manage
    Click Event Viewer > Applications and Services Logs > Microsoft > Windows > Fault-Tolerant-Heap
    View FTH Events The service stop and start events contain no additional data. The FTH Enabled event contains the Process ID (PID), the process image name, and the process instance start time.
    Disabling Fault Tolerant Heap


    Caution Serious problems may occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems may require you to reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. To disable Fault Tolerant Heap entirely on a system, set the REG_DWORD value HKLM\Software\Microsoft\FTH\Enabled to 0.
    After changing this value, restart the system. FTH will no longer activate for new applications.

    Resetting the list of applications tracked by FTH

    Fault Tolerant heap is self-managing and will autonomously stop applying in the case that mitigations are not effective for a given application. However, if you need to reset the list of applications for which FTH is mitigating problems (for example, if you are testing an application and need to reproduce a crash that FTH is mitigating), you can run the following command from an elevated command prompt:


    Rundll32.exe fthsvc.dll,FthSysprepSpecialize
    Caution Running this command will clear all FTH applications, so applications that are currently functioning properly may begin to crash again after running this command.

    Το Print Management στα Windows 7 έχει βελτιωθεί σημαντικά σε σχέση με τα Windows Vista. Υπάρχει ένα κεντρικό σημείο για διαχείριση των sharing printers στο δίκτυο και την διαχείριση των print servers και των network printer tasks (Print Management Microsoft Management Console (MMC) snap-in). Το Print Management βοηθά να παρακολουθούμε τα print queues και να λαμβάνουμε ειδοποιήσεις όταν σταματά η επεξεργασία των print jobs. Μπορούμε επίσης να κάνουμε migrate τους print servers και deploy τα printer connections μέσω Group Policy.
    Μπορείτε να βρείτε printers με error conditions με την χρήση φίλτρων και στέλνονται e-mail notifications ή τρέχουν scripts όταν απαιτείται. Το Print Management μπορεί να εμφανίσει περισσότερα στοιχεία, όπως επίπεδα toner και χαρτιού, για εκτυπωτές που παρέχουν Web-based management interface.
    Αυτό που μου άρεσε ιδιαίτερα είναι ότι βλέπεις και όλους τους printer drivers που έχουν εγκατασταθεί ακόμη και αν δεν χρησιμοποιούνται. Και ότι όλοι οι drivers by default τρέχουν σε Isolation mode “μακρυά” από τον spooler. Στα Windows 7 και στον Server 2008 R2 ο κώδικας των εκτυπωτών δεν τρέχει στο spoolsv.exe αλλά σε ένα dedicated process, το PrintIsolationHost.exe. Αν σκάσει κάτι, μόνο ένα instance του PrintIsolationHost.exe πέφτει και το spooler service δεν ζορίζεται.Με την εγκατάσταση κάθε driver ορίζεται αυτόματα το Shared isolation και για πολύ προβληματικούς drivers μπορούμε να ορίσουμε Isolated που σημαίνει όχι μόνο χώρια από τον spooler αλλά και χώρια από τους υπόλοιπους printer drivers.     Αναρωτιέστε ποιοί γράφουν κώδικα για τον πυρήνα του linux; Από τη μελέτη αυτή το ανησυχητικό είναι το 7% unclassified contributors (και μιλάμε για τον πυρήνα όχι για drivers ή εφαρμογές)! Ο Johnathan Corbet κοίταξε τον κώδικα από τον 12/2008 μέχρι τον 1/2010 και στις 2,8 εκατομύρια γραμμές σε 55.000 αλλαγές βρήκε:
    18% κώδικα από εθελοντές χωρίς “διασυνδέσεις” με εταιρείες 7% unclassified contributors 75% από πληρωμένους προγραμματιστές (πως λέμε πληρωμένους δολοφόνους – κάτι τέτοιο) Από τις εταιρείες:
    η Red Hat με συμμετοχή 12%, η Intel με 8% οι IBM και Novell με 6% η κάθε μια και η Oracle με 3% Υπάρχει μια αναλυτική αναφορά από το Linux Foundation του 8/2009: “Linux Kernel Development: How Fast it is Going, Who is Doing It, What They are Doing, and Who is Sponsoring It”
     
    Ο Bill Gates εκτός από το Twitter (στο BillGates – είναι τσεκαρισμένο από το Twitter για την αυθεντικότητα) άρχισε και το blog του με θέματα κυρίως από τα ταξίδια του για το Gates Foundation. Ενδιαφέρον… Ο άνθρωπος έχει χρόνο πλέον για γράψιμο.

    Στην CES η Lenovo σάρωσε με τις ανακοινώσεις της για νέο hardware: Thinkpad Τ410 και T410s, T510, X100e, Thinkpad Edge άφησαν τις καλύτερες εντυπώσεις. Τα δύο τελευταία που είναι κατηγορίας netbook και lifestyle αντίστοιχα με εντυπωσίασαν με τα καταπληκτικά τους πληκτρολόγια. Είμαι πολύ δύσκολος σ’αυτό το σημείο και ένα κατα τ’άλλα καταπληκτικό notebook θα το απορρίψω αμέσως αν το πληκτρολόγιο δεν με ικανοποιεί. Μπράβο στη Lenovo και ελπίζω να την αντιγράψουν και όλοι οι υπόλοιποι…

Για να πω την αλήθεια βέβαια δεν ζηλεύω καθόλου το παιδάκι που το πιέζουν να κάνει πράγματα που δεν είναι της ηλικίας του (εδώ οι δικοί μου με τα blogs τους – http://mobilityclub.gr/blogs/undercover/default.aspx και http://01kid.wordpress.com/ - και δεν θέλω να τους σπρώξω άλλο). Αλλά από την άλλη αποδεικνύεται ότι με την κατάλληλη εκπαίδευση κάποια προϊόντα της Microsoft μπορούν να υποστηριχθούν από μαθητές Δημοτικού…
     
    Μιας και είμαστε σ’αυτές τις ηλικίες, η Microsoft έδωσε και το Kodu για το PC. Το Kodu είναι μια visual γλώσσα προγραμματισμού φτιαγμένη ειδικά για την δημιουργία παιχνιδιών. Μπορεί να χρησιμοποιηθεί από παιδιά και μεγάλους. Χαρακτηριστικά:

    Η Microsoft εμφανώς γύρισε σε attack mode. Μετά από κάμποσα χρόνια αμυντικής στρατηγικής (εξαιρώ όλα τα προϊόντα για servers) δείχνει ότι άλλαξε γραμμή πλεύσης. Πιο δυνατή, με αυτοπεποίθηση σε μια πολύ ανταγωνιστικότερη αγορά παρουσιάζει το ένα προϊόν μετά το άλλο και σιγά σιγά τα δένει όλα μαζί σε ένα οικοσύστημα που θα κάνει τη ζωή μας πιο εύκολη και τη δουλειά μας πιο παραγωγική.
    Τα Windows 7 έχουν δείξει πλέον τις δυνατότητές τους – θέλουμε μικρές incremental αλλαγές για να κάνουμε τη δουλειά μας πιο γρήγορα, πιο απλά και πιο σταθερά.
    Το Bing έχει γίνει πρακτικά η “άλλη” πρόταση στην αναζήτηση και το μερίδιο του μεγαλώνει αργά αλλά σταθερά. Το Bing στις χώρες που έχουν υποστήριξη για local search θα πάει ακόμη καλύτερα και φυσικά στο Windows Phone 7 έχει το δικό του hardware κουμπάκι (και επειδή το είδα σε πλήρη λειτουργία, πιστέψτε με θα σας αφήσει άφωνους) – Hint 1: To Bing app για iPhone είναι 3ο στα free downloads στο AppStore! – Hint 2: Έχει ενργοποιηθεί η συνεργασία με το Wolfram Alpha (αν δεν το ξέρετε, ψάξτε τα sample queries στο site του – απλά απίστευτο) και κάποια αποτελέσματα έχουν πραγματικά πρακτική αξία.
    Το Microsoft Office 2010 έρχεται πιο ισχυρό με social networking υποστήριξη στο Outlook και φυσικά Web εκδόσεις για Word, Excel, PowerPoint και OneNote. Μαζί και η έκδοση Starter με λιγότερες λειτουργίες και διαφημίσεις αλλά δωρεάν για όλους.
    Η πρώτη ανακοίνωση του Windows Phone 7 Series με κώδικα γραμμένο από την αρχή (πραγματικά – τώρα γράφουν ξανά και όλα τα APIs – τέρμα στον legacy κώδικα) πάνω στα νέα Windows CE 6 έχει ανακατέψει όλη την αγορά του mobility. Νέο UI σχεδιασμένο για το περιεχόμενο σας και όχι για τους προγραμματιστές και τις εφαρμογές τους (θα πούμε αναλυτικά τι σημαίνει αυτό αργότερα) και αυστηρές (εντελώς συγκεκριμένες) προδιαγραφές για κάθε κατασκευαστή ώστε η εμπειρία χρήσης τους να είναι ακριβώς όπως πρέπει – τέρμα τα κολλήματα σε προβληματικές υλοποιήσεις hardware από OEMs που ήθελαν να βγάλουν γρήγορα μια συσκευή στην αγορά. Accountability – κρατήστε την λέξη αυτή.
    Οι διαφημίσεις της με τους Laptop Hunters έχουν ταράξει αρκετά τα νερά και ανοίγει στην Αμερική τα πρώτα μαγαζιά λιανικής και μάλιστα δίπλα σε Apple stores.
    Η Microsoft είναι πια αποδεκτό μέλος της κοινότητας Linux και επίσημος contributor σε κώδικα (από την έκδοση 2.6.32 του πυρήνα Linux). Microsoft released source code for its Linux drivers
    Περιμένουμε νέο Home Server που ολοκληρώνει ακόμη περισσότερο το σπιτικό δίκτυο με όλες τις συσκευές (notebooks, τηλεοράσεις, recorders, ΧΒΟΧ) – DLNA!
    Ελπίζουμε να έρθει και στην Ελλάδα το Zune HD – Δεν είναι iPod – ρώτηστε κάποιον που το χρησιμοποιεί…
    Και φυσικά επιβεβαιώθηκε η κυκλοφορία του Microsoft Courier (δεν ξέρουμε αν αυτό θα είναι το τελικό όνομα), της ηλεκτρονικής ατζέντας (και e-reader προφανώς) με τις δύο οθόνες, το μικρό μέγεθος και την δυνατότητα για αναγνώριση γραφής όπως σε ένα tablet. Όλες οι σημειώσεις σας θα συγχρονίζονται αυτόματα με το web για άμεση πρόσβαση από παντού αλλά μάλλον δεν θα είναι σε Windows 7 αλλά σε Windows CE και αυτό.

    Το 2010 στην Ελλάδα θα είναι πολύ δύσκολο (όπως και το 2011, 12, 13…) αλλά θα έχουμε κάποια πράγματα που θα μαλακώσουν το πόνο μας.     Βγήκε το MyPhone 1.6 και όλα δείχνουν ότι οι διάφορες πρόσθετες υπηρεσίες συγκλίνουν όλο και περισσότερο όσο περιμένουμε τις νέες συσκευές με Windows Phone 7 (το Series χάθηκε στο δρόμο…). Με τη νέα έκδοση μπορείτε να διαχειριστείτε και να αλλάξετε τις επαφές σας από το περιβάλλον του MyPhone στο web καθώς και να ανεβάσετε από το PC σας φωτογραφίες στην υπηρεσία και αυτή να τις στείλει στο κινητό σας! Διορθώθηκε και το πρόβλημα με την ενημέρωση μέσω wifi.

    Αύριο θα έχουμε και κάποιες ανακοινώσεις (την έκπληξη την χάλασε η SanDisk).

    O Mel Sampat (program manager Της Microsoft για τα Windows Mobile) ξεκίνησε τη δική του εταιρεία ανάπτυξης εφαρμογών για Windows Phone 7, τη Mist Labs. Μήπως ξέρει τι έρχεται στην αγορά και ετοιμάζεται να βγάλει χρήμα; Λέω, μήπως;

    Το University of Kent περνάει από το Kentmail (ένα σύστημα της Sun με web mail και το ατελείωτο διαθέσιμο χώρο των 50 ΜΒ!! ανά λογαριασμό) στο Live@Edu της Microsoft με Exchange accounts για φοιτητές και καθηγητές με 10 GB (ή του ύψους ή του βάθους οι Άγγλοι) και τον γνωστό Skydrive χώρο. Παράλληλα χρησιμοποιούν Moodle οπότε το Microsoft Live Services Plug-in for Moodle και το Office add-in for Moodle θα τους έρθει κουτί.

    Για την αγορά της εκπαίδευσης στήθηκε και ο Windows MultiPoint Server 2010. Θα επανέλθω με λεπτομέρειες. Προσπαθώ να βρώ το κατάλληλο hardware για δοκιμές. Από τα specs φαίνεται να είναι ότι πρέπει…

    Η IBM αναστάτωσε την κοινότητα Open Source με το κυνήγι της εταιρείας TurboHercules που έχει δημιουργήσει το open source project Hercules, έναν emulator για PCs που μας (λέμε τώρα) δίνει την δυνατότητα να τρέξουμε λογισμικό φτιαγμένο για μηχανές IBM System Z. Επειδή τα mainframes αυτά είναι προφανώς πανάκριβα, καλό το open source για να αντικαταστήσουμε τα Windows αλλά όχι να υποκαθιστούμε για τα δικά μας προϊόντα σκέφτηκαν τα στελέχη της IBM και αμόλησαν τους δικηγόρους.     Στα πρώτα πραγματικά προβλήματα προσθέστε και ότι σε ανοικτό χώρο (την ημέρα) η οθόνη είναι ένα πολύ ωραίος καθρέφτης για το μαλλί σας. Τι περίμεναν – όσο πιο εντυπωσιακή μια οθόνη σε ένα δωμάτιο τόσο μεγαλύτερο πρόβλημα έχει στον ήλιο (μέχρι να δούμε OLED σε τέτοια διάσταση). http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/10_16/b4174072726117.htm Διακοπές και διάβασμα e-books σε iPad δεν παίζουν καλά μαζί… Όλα τα υπόλοιπα είναι γκρίνια από αυτούς που δεν κατάλαβαν το κοινό που θα το καταναλώσει και την χρήση του. Παρεπιπτόντως φαίνεται ότι η μπαταρία αντέχει περισσότερο από 10 ώρες – υπάρχουν αναφορές για περισσότερο από 12 ώρες.

    Δεν είναι πρωταπριλιά… Η HP έναντι 1.2 δις δολλαρίων (δεν στέλνουν και απο εδώ τίποτα αγόρασε τελικά την Palm που είχε βγει στο σφυρί τις τελευταίες εβδομάδες. Η μετοχή της είχε πέσει από τα $18 πριν μερικούς μήνες κάτω από τα $4 τις τελευταίες ημέρες. Να δούμε τι έχουν στο μυαλό τους. Τώρα πλέον υπάρχει ένας ακόμη μεγάλος (πολύ μεγάλος) παίκτης στο mobility. Τι μπορούν να κάνουν;

    Ο πολυαναμενόμενος Internet Explorer 9 Beta είναι διαθέσιμος για κατέβασμα σε 32-bit και 64-bit εκδόσεις για Windows 7 και Vista (τι είναι αυτό σε διάφορες γλώσσες και στα Ελληνικά.
    Ο νέος IE9 έχει πληθώρα νέων χαρακτηριστικών (έχουν αναλάβει τα διάφορα blogs τα αναλυτικά reviews και τα συγκριτικά στην ταχύτητα σε σχέση με άλλους browsers με ενδεικτικό και καλά τεκμηριωμένο το Internet Explorer 9 beta review: Microsoft reinvents the browser του Ed Bott) και δείχνει τον δρόμο σε μια νέα γενιά browsers που χρησιμοποιούν καλύτερα το διαθέσιμο hardware. Ίσως τώρα πλέον η Microsoft να έχει έναν web browser πιο standards-compliant από οποιονδήποτε άλλο. Με υποστήριξη CSS3 και HTML5, βελτιωμένη (σημαντικά) Javascript engine και το νέο Onebox για URLs και αναζήτηση ταυτόχρονα. Προσωπικά μου αρέσουν πολύ τα pinned sites.     Η SanDisk ανακοίνωσε ένα 1.8-inch solid state drive (SSD) των 32GB, βασισμένο σε τεχνολογία NAND flash memory, για να αντικαταστήσει τους συνηθισμένους σκληρούς δίσκους. Ένα notebook με SanDisk SSD ξεκινάει τα Microsoft Windows Vista Enterprise σε μόλις 35 seconds αντί για 55 seconds που χρειάζεται ένα με κλασικό HDD. Επίσης έχει average file access rate 0.12 milliseconds αντί για τα 19 milliseconds του σκληρού δίσκου. Όλα αυτά με πολύ χαμηλότερη κατανάλωση ενέργειας: 0.4 watt κατά την χρήση αντί 1.0 watt. Προς το παρόν είναι διαθέσιμο για OEMs και υπολογίζεται ότι θα αυξήσει την τελική τιμή ενός notebook κατά περίπου $600 στις αρχές του 2007 μέχρι να αρχίσει να πέφτει το κόστος.

    Αντιγράφω τις "προβλέψεις" για το 2007 από το WServerNews:
    MICROSOFT: Like last year, MS is going to barrel along fine. They will continue to buy companies that have interesting technology, and try to fend off Oracle and Google. Getting in bed with Novell/SUSE will not bring them the benefits envisioned. Look for continued push in the enterprise, focusing even more on collaboration. Redmond will declare botnets as the '07 top Net threat, as the unlimited bandwidth of millions of zombies allows spammers to send hard-to-kill image-spam and serve as a vector for other malware.
    OPERATING SYSTEMS: Vista will have a bull's eye painted on its back. Redmond's highly touted SDL (Security Development Lifecycle) will turn out to make Vista more secure, but not secure enough. There will be dozens of Vista vulnerabilities found during 2007, and Vista's default support for P2P protocols and IPv6 will facilitate the delivery of malicious payloads. Remember: OS upgrades break lots of things, so TEST, TEST, TEST! And if you can, this would be a good time to get rid of apps with OS-dependencies.
    IT BUDGETS: To start with hiring, that will be slow in '07, so you will get lots of applicants for each opening. Flat IT budgets (no more than 6% up) means spending will be focused on projects that show true bottom-line value. Top 2007 IT skills companies are looking for: Programming/app development, Project management, IT/business analysis, Security, and Help Desk/Tech Support. No surprises here for the coming year.
    MALWARE: Stand-alone, signature-based AV will die in '07. It's already smelling funny. Stand-alone antispyware products will need morph into a converged security client or they will die too in '07. Slapping a bunch of different agents together in a "suite" is going to be exposed as the quick-and-dirty resource hog it really is.
    SMART MONEY: '07 is going to look a lot like 1999! Venture Capitalists are pouring cash into consumer-focused start-ups doing things like sharing photos and videos online and chatting with friends, hoping to do a 'YouTube' deal. Other areas that will break out in '07 are phone-over-internet; biotech companies, and 'green' energy start-ups.
    HARDWARE: Virtualization was hot in '06 and will be smoking in '07, expect wars over standards and market leadership -- One Laptop Per Child will ship its $100 product, with a Linux Desktop -- Surveillance cameras will connect to facial recognition software, and IT will move into physical security -- Mid '07, 64-bit quad-core CPUs will ship standard for both desktop and server. With the new expansion slots, you will be able to buy a 32-way server for what you paid for a four-way server in '05. -- Certified Wireless USB will make major strides in '07, but lots of gadgets will come with Wi-Fi built-in!
    NETWORK VULNERABILITIES: The two 'drivers' of testing networks for holes will be a) compliance and a realization that no pen-testing is really a major business risk. Bad guys will continue to ferret out and exploit existing holes, and will have "zero-day" exploits for 30-40% of announced patches. McAfee predicted that hackers are going to target MP3 files, so get those off your servers and workstations. Time to set a testing schedule/methodology and stick to it! Heads-up on Vista here; Lots of network monitoring tools cannot inspect Vista's IPv6 packets, making that a huge potential security hole. -- VoIP will be adopted massively, will be hacked and spam voice mail will show up.
    MESSAGING SECURITY: ISPs are going to shut down both corporate and private users that allow spam to be sent from zombie PC's -- You will find some employees violating corporate policy and forward all their corporate email to gmail, since they get way more storage space there. Microsoft will urge you to give -each- employee 2Gig storage space -- 2007 will be the year you migrate away from stand-alone Exchange security tools to an integrated product that does it all -- A bug in the BlackBerry/Exchange middleware will be exploited and spread in 10 minutes through all email servers; and after you install Exchange 2007 you will create a smart phone/PDA policy.
    2007 TECH TRENDS: Vista adoption will be slow and measured but steady. Plan to patch it every month just like older OSen. -- Google will continue to scoop up other content providers. -- TV delivered by the Net is going to really penetrate in 2007. Municipal Wi-Fi networks will continue to get rolled out throughout 2007 -- 'Web 2.0' was a bust, and people will say that the real future of the Net (Web 3.0) will turn our to be 3D virtual environments like "Second Life". -- More and more underground server bunkers will provide protection from intrusion and natural disasters.
    WEB SECURITY: Cyber criminals will increase their bot networks -- Spear phishing will get even more targeted -- major players will get big time into 'behavioral marketing' (adware's 'ivy league sibling') -- blended malware will somewhat lower in volume, but become more virulent and hard to kill -- rootkits will proliferate but protection and remediation will increase too. Big companies spend a lot of money and are getting safer. Smaller outfits will feel the burn of attacks more in '07 than ever before. Identity Management will be the most important technology to both privacy and security compliance in 2007, but the bigger the organization, the harder it is to implement.

    Cisco had said yesterday that it had been in negotiations with Apple to license the iPhone name, which it was using in connection with its Linksys Internet phone, after repeated requests by Apple, and that with the announcement of the iPhone, they expected Apple to agree to its conditions and sign the agreement that day.
    Apparently they didn't.
    Apple was quoted by several sources yesterday as saying that since the Apple iPhone was a cell phone, and the Linksys iPhone was an Internet phone, that they didn't see it as being
    a trademark infringement.
    Cisco apparently feels differently. Today it filed suit in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California against Apple, seeking to prevent Apple from infringing upon and deliberately copying and using Cisco's registered iPhone trademark. Cisco said it is seeking injunctive relief to prevent Apple from copying Cisco's iPhone trademark, which means that the company is asking the court to make Apple stop using the trademark before the suit goes to trial.

    Cisco said it "obtained the iPhone trademark in 2000 after completing the acquisition of Infogear, which previously owned the mark and sold iPhone products for several years. Infogear's original filing for the trademark dates to March 20, 1996. Linksys, a division of Cisco, has been shipping a new family of iPhone products since early last year. On Dec. 18, Linksys expanded the iPhone family with additional products."
     
    Cisco disagreed with Apple's contention that the two phones were different, noting that "The potential for convergence of the home phone, cell phone, work phone and PC is limitless, which is why it is so important for us to protect our brand."
    Now, anybody who believes this is actually going to make it to court, please poke a stick in your right eye. This is all part of the dance that corporations do all the time. Apple asked for the name, Cisco asked for big bucks, Apple is trying to avoid the issue, and now Cisco is upping the ante, but if Apple goes ahead and signs the agreement, everything will be copacetic. If I were Apple, I wouldn't count on the fact that even in Silicon Valley an intellectual property judge would make a distinction between the two devices.

    You all know that EMC redefined the storage business, but did you know that it has also redefined definitions?
    Our sources claim that EMC's has killed plans to advance the Retrospect backup software line – part of a larger move to slash costs across the Insignia SMB (small- and medium-sized business) business group. EMC's public relations team has countered such suggestions by saying that Retrospect remains a key part of Insignia's "maturation." All of which leaves us wondering when "maturation" started to mean "end of lifed."
    EMC and our sources agree that significant cuts were made recently at the Walnut Creek, California offices where the majority of the Insignia group worked. Last week, EMC stated that 40 people in marketing, sales and other spots were fired.
    That's mostly accurate, although it leaves out some key items.
    EMC's Insignia group largely consisted of workers it acquired with the $50m purchase of software maker Dantz back in 2004. Over the years, the group swelled to more than 100 workers.
    Forty of those workers have been let go, as mentioned. Although EMC has in fact made more cuts to the group. A large number of the Insignia staff have found new jobs at VMware – also part of EMC.
    The internal departures could spell trouble for customers who use EMC/Dantz's flagship backup product Retrospect. Our sources indicate that a skeleton crew has been left to oversee the release of Version 7.5 of the software. That code due out this quarter will include updates for Microsoft's Vista and Apple's Leopard operating systems.
    The engineers, however, who were working of the flashier Version 8.0 of the product due out at the end of 2007 have left the company on 10 weeks' severance or gone to VMware, according to our insiders.
    EMC refused to address directly whether or not 8.0 will ship.
    "There are dedicated engineering resources focused on advancing Retrospect," an EMC spokesman said. "You will see enhancements coming this quarter."
    Of course, we weren't asking about the 7.5 enhancements due this quarter but rather the very existence of the 8.0 product.
    When pushed again on this point, EMC assured us that the SMB market remains a priority for the company and that Insignia will live on in style. "You will see more hardware and software products for the SMB space at this time next year than you see now," the spokesman said.
    But that message comes as EMC admits that only 30-50 of the Insignia/Dantz staff are left – a figure confirmed by our sources.
    These workers have been pushed into a corner at the Walnut Creek office, while EMC has moved to rent out their old cubicles.
    "They closed three quarters of the office and even the kitchen to EMC workers," one source said. "They put up walls and moved everyone out."
    These changes shocked the Insignia staff who were told of the moves in December by current EMC VP and former Dantz CEO Larry Zulch.
    "The engineers were halfway through 8.0 in December and then all work ceased," one source said.
    "From what I understand, the new version will not even be released," said another source. "Everyone had such high hopes for the product. It had a polished interface, and I think it would have been a success."
    EMC clearly suffers from some manner of SMB chaos. Of course, it won't let on to such gyrations if you want to purchase a one-year Retrospect support contract.
    Those of you looking to stick with Retrospect for the long haul should push EMC on the 8.0 release. Otherwise, it's time to give Symantec a call.

    Το παρακάτω άρθρο είναι η απόδοση στα ελληνικά ενός άρθρου της Julie Lerman. Είναι σχετικά παλιό αλλά η λογική ενός Tablet PC παραμένει η ίδια:
    Βρήκα ότι οι gadget lovers δεν έχουν πρόβλημα να παίξουν με ένα Tablet PC για να το δουν, αλλά για τους υπόλοιπους χρειάζεται μια συγκεκριμένη εφαρμογή που να έχει νόημα ανάλογα με τη εργασία του καθενός. Η λίστα των demo εφαρμογών μου αλλάζει τακτικά αλλά συνήθως κάνω τα παρακάτω:
    Ένα στοιχείο που είναι γενικά εντυπωσιακό είναι η δυνατότητα του OneNote να ηχογραφεί και να αποθηκεύει τον ήχο με τα χειρόγραφα σημειώματα. Συχνά ανοίγω το recorder, δίνω το TPC σε κάποιον να γράψει κάτι στο OneNote, και μετά δείχνω πως ακους τον ήχο με taps στις σημειώσεις.
    Αυτοί που έχουν ένα PDA ή έχουν ακούσει για τις δυσκολίες της αναγνώρισης χειρόγραφου κειμένου θέλουν να δοκιμάσουν την αναγνώριση. Ανοίξτε το Word και το TIP που έρχεται με το Service Pack 2. Το σαγόνι πέφτει σχεδόν ακαριαία. Για κείμενο στα Αγγλικά φυσικά. Η πρόβλεψή μου είναι ότι και μόνο αυτό το χαρακτηριστικό θα κάνει πολλούς να τρέξουν για ένα Tablet PC.
    Στην συνέχεια δείχνω πιο συγκεκριμένες εφαρμογές όπως το Grafigo, MathPractice, ή το καλύτερο: Dots.
    Συνήθως ακούω γκρίνιες για την τιμή, την διάρκεια της μπαταρίας και άλλα παράπονα. Για παράδειγμα οι developers θέλουν μεγάλους επεξεργαστές και δίσκους. Ένα Tablet PC όμως δεν αντικαθιστά όλους τους υπολογιστές. Υπάρχουν κατηγορίες χρηστών που μπορώ να τους δείξω πως σχεδιάζω εφαρμογές, σημειώνω ιδέες, καταγράφω εργασίες που πρέπει να γίνουν, κάνω copy/paste screenshots και βάζω παρατηρήσεις. Η δεύτερη γενιά Tablets όμως καταρίπτει το στερεότυπο του αδύναμου υπολογιστή. Πχ. το Toshiba M200 έχει ανάλυση 1400x1050, αρκετή για το Visual Studio και επεξεργαστή 1.5+ GHz Centrino. Αν τους ρωτήσετε πότε αναβάθμισαν για τελευταία φορά τον υπολογιστή τους θα δείτε ότι υπάρχουν πιθανότητες ένα Tablet PC να ξεπερνά σε δυνατότητες το desktop σύστημά τους (που τους πιάνει και πολύτιμο χώρο στο γραφείο).
    Γενικά προτιμώ να ξεκινώ την συζήτηση με βάση τις εφαρμογές και όχι το hardware. Την επόμενη φορά ξεκινήστε το Dots και το OneNote, και έπειτα δώστε το Tablet PC να «παίξουν».
    Ποιά προγράμματα πιστεύετε ότι επιδεικνύουν καλύτερα τις δυνατότητες ενός Tablet PC;
    Φυσικά εξαρτάται από το κοινό... Οι εκπαιδευτικοί θα τρελλαθούν με τα Classroom Presenter, xThink, MathPractice και MS Reader. Οι «corporate» χρήστες με τα TabletPlanner, Groove και MindManager X5 Pro. Για τις κάθετες αγορές δώστε βάρος στα Mi-Forms, Orderpad, ESRI ArcMap. Οι νοσοκομειακοί ας δουν τα Allscripts TouchWorks, Eclipsys SunriseXA καικ τις υπόλοιπες ιατρικές εφαρμογές για Tablet PCs.
    Η top 10 λίστα εφαρμογών «επίδειξης» για Tablet PC για το μέσο χρήστη είναι:
